NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] REPPAS: PRESIDENT CLINTON'S VISIT TO GREECE WILL PASS OFF SMOOTHLYWeb Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Athens, 06/11/1999 (MPA) Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas stressed that Mr. Clinton's visit to Greece will pass off smoothly in statements he made after the meeting that was chaired by prime minister Kostas Simitis to examine the security measures taken for the protection of the US president.Mr. Reppas also stressed that street protests will not be prohibited during the Clinton visit and that the citizens can exercise their private and constitutional rights, adding however that any problems that could suddenly arise will be dealt with immediately. Referring to the meetings of the prime minister with the political party leaders yesterday, Mr. Reppas pointed out that they agreed that the protests must be held in a peaceful manner without violent incidents. Mr. Reppas also said that US president Clinton's schedule will be announced in the following days. [02] THE US PRESIDENT WILL ARRIVE IN ATHENS ON NOVEMBER 13Web Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Athens, 06/11/1999 (MPA) US president Bill Clinton will arrive in Athens on Saturday, November 13 accompanied by his wife Hilary and by senior US officials, among them US secretary of state Madeleine Albright, the White House chief of staff and his security adviser.Immediately after his arrival, he will go to the presidential building to meet with president Kostis Stephanopoulos and then he will meet with prime minister Kostas Simitis. The US president will also meet with right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis. Meanwhile, over 10.000 police officers will undertake to protect the US president and already the Athens Airport has been turned into a fortress. On Monday, November 15 the US president will go to Istanbul. [04] INFLATION CLOSED AT 2.2% IN OCTOBERWeb Posted: 16:46 GMT+2Athens, 06/11/1999 (MPA) Inflation closed at 2.2% in the month of October compared to 2% in September, according to the National Statistics Agency.The Greek government's economic staff attributes the increase to the price hikes in fruits, vegetables and fuel and estimates that inflation will return to its downward course without the implementation of fiscal measures. A new president will be elected in the Socialist International summit meeting, while the contents of the new ideological manifesto will be discussed after a presentation by Felipe Gonzales. Mr. Simitis will also meet with French president Jacques Chirac to discuss Turkey's candidature for EU membership. [B] BALKANS[06] THE NEW ALBANIAN GOVERNMENT GOT A VOTE OF CONFIDENCEWeb Posted: 16:46 GMT+2Tirana, 06/11/1999 (MPA) The new Albanian government of socialist prime minister Ilir Meta got a vote of confidence yesterday.In his speech the Albanian prime minister stressed that the new government will fight hard against illegal trading, corruption and organized crime. From the vote abstained all the parliament deputies of the Albanian opposition.
