NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] THE NATIONAL BANK OF GREECE SHARES WILL START TRADING IN THE WALL STREET ON OCTOBER 18Web Posted: 15:27 GMT+2Athens, 02/10/1999 (MPA) The National Bank of Greece shares will start trading in the Wall Street on October 18, while the public subscriptions for the purchase of the new shares will last from October 12 to 15.A total of 4 million shares will be distributed in Greece and abroad and this number could increase by 600.000. National Bank of Greece governor Theodoros Karatzas and vice-governor Apostolos Tambakis in the presence of undersecretary of finance Nikos Christodoulakis briefed the institutional investors in the country, while a similar procedure will be held for the foreign institutional investors as well next week. Among the issues that will be discussed in his contacts with Greek officials will be Greece's accession into the Euro-zone countries and the relations between Greece and Turkey.Chancellor Schroeder in a message that was published by the German-speaking newspaper "Athener Zeitung" which is published in Athens characterizes the state of the Greek-German relations as excellent, while he underlines his full support to the efforts made by Greece to join the EMU in 2001. Mr. Schroeder also underlined Greece's contribution to the reconstruction of the Balkans, stressing its leading role in the Balkans. [05] THESSALONIKI-SOFIA-SKOPJE ARE LINKED THROUGH FIBER OPTICS CABLEWeb Posted: 15:27 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 02/10/1999 (MPA) The new 7 million dollar fiber optics cable which links Sofia with Thessaloniki and Skopje since yesterday will secure upgraded telecommunications for Greece, Bulgaria and FYROM.The new optical cable avenue as it is called by specialists was inaugurated by Bulgarian government vice-president Evgeni Bakartziev in the presence of Greek undersecretary of transportation Giorgos Salayiannis. The fiber optics cable is expected to secure a perfect flow of information among the three countries through telephone lines, television images and digital elements of mobile phone communication. Furthermore, it will facilitate the access to Internet to a great degree. [06] SEISMOLOGISTS SUGGEST CALM TO THE PEOPLEWeb Posted: 14:57 GMT+2Athens, 02/10/1999 (MPA) The seismologists continue to reassure the people calling them to be calm and not pay attention to the rumors for an imminent earthquake in the region of Athens during the weekend.Athens Geodynamic Institute director Giorgos Stavrakakis stated that the aftershock activity is improving, while Earthquake Risk Assessment Committee president Dimitris Papanikolaou stated that he does not understand why the people adopt the earthquake rumors in spite of the statements to the contrary which are made by the committee members. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki professor Vasilis Papazachos underlined that the committee has not concealed any information. However, the predictions over an imminent earthquake made by the VAN team of seismologists have alarmed a large number of Athens residents creating an exodus. [B] BALKANS[07] ALLATINI LTD IS A PARTNER IN A SOFIA COMPANYWeb Posted: 15:27 GMT+2Sofia, 02/10/1999 (MPA) The Allatini Ltd with a letter to the Athens Stock Exchange board of directors announced the founding of a company in Sofia under the name "ALLATINI-KRAPS MEL AD".The share capital of the new company in which participate Allatini Ltd with 41% and Sofia's flour mills Melnitcen Kombinat - Kraps Mel is 50.000 new lev. The new company will produce and distribute special flours and flour mixtures to the Bulgarian market. [08] THE MILITARY EXERCISE "NIKIFOROS '99" STARTED TODAYWeb Posted: 14:57 GMT+2Nicosia, 02/10/1999 (MPA) The military exercise "Nikiforos '99" got underway today in Cyprus with the participation of Navy forces and warships from Greece, while part of the exercise will be watched by Greek minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos.Mr. Tsochatzopoulos is on a formal visit to Cyprus where within the framework of his contacts had a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Sokratis Hasikos. Mr. Tsochatzopoulos stated that Greece's strategic goal is the strengthening of the defense capability of the Cypriot Republic and the joint defense of Greece and Cyprus in order to deal with any outside threat. In the meeting of the two ministers were discussed specific issues such as the joint defense doctrine.
