    [01] "CULTURAL OLYMPICS" TO BE HELD IN ANCIENT OLYMPIA

    Thessaloniki, 29/08/1999 (MPA) Culture Minister Elisabeth Papazoi has announced that the site of ancient Olympia will host the "Cultural Olympics", whose organization will be undertaken by Greece with the support of UNESCO and the International Olympics Committee.

    Ms. Papazoi also stated that Cultural Olympic offices will also be established in Thessaloniki.

    The Minister also added that progress has been made in the negotiations

    for the purchase of the Kostaki collection of Russian avant-garde art, which will be housed in the Thessaloniki Contemporary Art Museum.

    [02] GREEK-ALBANIAN ECONOMIC COOPERATION COM/TEE MEETS IN FALL

    Athens, 29/08/1999 (MPA) A Greek-Albanian economic cooperation committee will convene in Athens in October, according to the national economy ministry, thus marking a further step in the improvement of bilateral relations.

    Within the framework of bilateral talks, new border crossings linking Konitsa and Premeti will be established, while Greece will also provide Albania with 1.5 million US dollars in aid to fortify the neighboring country's budget.

    [03] AEGEAN LOCAL AUTHORITIES PROVIDE ADDITIONAL AID TO TURKEY

    Athens, 29/08/1999 (MPA) Aegean Minister Stavros Benos has announced that his ministry will coordinate efforts of local governments and non- governmental organizations of the Aegean Sea in providing additional aid to Turkey.

    At the same time, the regional administration of eastern Macedonia and Thrace has begun collecting aid for Turkey.

    [04] NEW ARCHBISHOP OF AMERICA TO BE ENTHRONED ON SEPTEMBER 18

    Athens, 29/08/1999 (MPA) The newly elected Archbishop of America Dimitrios will be enthroned on September 18 at the Cathedral Church of New York.

    In the interim, he will have a series of meetings with the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos and political party leaders.

    Mr. Dimitrios stressed that he will attempt to instill a climate of cooperation, unity and peace among the Greek Orthodox faithful of America.

    [05] XANTHI HOSTS CONCERT FOR TURKEY'S EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS

    Xanthi, 29/08/1999 (MPA) A concert in support of Turkey's earthquake survivors will be held in the city of Xanthi, Thrace, tomorrow, the first such event since last week's catastrophe.

    The bilingual event, with songs both in Greek and Turkish, will feature Greek musician Thanasis Gaifilias, whose orchestra will comprise both Christian and Muslim musicians, while renowned signer George Dalaras will also participate.

    The proceeds of the concert will be given to Izmit's authorities in order to strengthen their efforts in assisting the region's survivors, while a similar concert will also be held in Izmit as well.

    The concert, which is being organized by the prefecture of Xanthi and the Greek Radio, will be broadcast in Greece and possibly in Turkey.

    [06] GREECE-FYROM RELATIONS ARE PRESENTLY AT GOOD LEVEL

    Florina, 29/08/1999 (MPA) The prime ministers of Greece and FYROM, Costas Simitis and Ljupco Georgievski respectively, met briefly in the northern town of Florina yesterday, where they confirmed the good level of ties between their countries,

    Messrs. Simitis and Georgievski discussed the expansion of bilateral economic and trade links and attaining Balkan peace and stability.

    Also present at the meeting held in Florina's archaeological museum were Foreign Minister George Papandreou and his FYROM counterpart, Alexaksdar Dimitrov.

    Following his talks with his counterpart from FYROM, Mr. Simitis stated that

    ties between the two neighbors could act as a paradigm for relations between countries in the Balkans.

    Mr. Georgievski, who described the talks as "ideal", commented that recent problems in the bilateral economic sector would very soon be overcome, creating a framework for Greek companies to invest in FYROM.

    [07] ALTERNATE FM TO MEET WITH COOK IN LONDON TOMORROW

    London, 29/08/1999 (MPA) Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister Yiannos Kranidiotis is scheduled to meet with British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook during his visit to London tomorrow, with whom he will discuss bilateral relations, European Union issues, the Cyprus issue, Greek-Turkish relations and Turkey's relations with the Union.

    Mr. Kranidiotis is also expected to meet on Monday with Britain's special envoy on the Cyprus problem Sir David Hannay.

    [08] GREECE WINS GOLD IN JAVELIN THROW

    Seville, 29/08/1999 (MPA) Greece's Mirela Maniani-Gelili won the gold medal in last night's javelin competition, women's races, at the World Athletics Championships, with a throw of 67.09 meters.

    Kostas Gatsioudis, competing in today's men's races, is also expected to perform well.
