[02] US-GREEK NAVAL EXERCISE ALEXANDER THE GREAT '99 UNDERWAYWeb Posted: 17:41 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 07/03/1999 (MPA) Greek and United States naval units are currently taking part in the Alexander the Great '99 exercise, an annual amphibious exercise hosted by Greece.The exercise, to end on March 11, is being held in the vicinity of Volos bay and the western Aegean Sea. It will culminate in simultaneous assault operations on the island of Skyros on Tuesday morning. The exercise is designed to improve cooperation and interoperability of sailors and marines in both Greek and US naval forces. A.F. [04] EX-AMBASSADOR'S REPORT SHEDS LIGHT ON EVENTS IN KENYAWeb Posted: 17:41 GMT+2Athens, 07/03/1999 (MPA) The report given by Greece's former ambassador to Kenya George Kostoulas to the state prosecutor, containing a day-by-day account of the events that transpired in Kenya up to the PKK leader's arrest, was published yesterday by an Athens daily (Ta Nea) even though it was to be classified.According to the report, when Abdullah Ocalan ((code-named by the Greek Intelligence Service (EYP) as "Grandma")) refused to cooperate with Greek authorities, EYP ordered the ambassador and the EYP agent assigned to Mr. Ocalan that they throw him and his entourage out of the ambassador's residence. Government spokesperson Dimitris Reppas said that the report is fragmented and misleading. On the other hand, the spokesman of the main opposition party New Democracy, said that the report constitutes "irrefutable evidence" that the government has disdain for the parliament and the democratic institutions. [B] WORLD[05] MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY LEADER OFFICIALLY VISITS UNITED STATESWeb Posted: 17:41 GMT+2Washington, 07/03/1999 (MPA) The leader of the country's main opposition party, New Democracy's Kostas Karamanlis, has embarked on his first official visit to the United States.According to his itinerary, Mr. Karamanlis will give an interview to Cable News Network (CNN) tomorrow, and hold talks with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on Tuesday, Vice-President Al Gore on Thursday, and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Archbishop Spyridon on Friday. The ND leader will also visit the universities of Tufts and Harvard, the Wall Street Journal and the Center for Strategic and International Studies in addition to giving a speech to the Greater New York Federation of Greek Societies. Mr. Karamanlis is accompanied by New Democracy MPs Petros Molyviatis, Vassilis Magginas and Fani Palli-Petralia. A.F. [06] US-GREEK RELATIONS NATIONAL COMMITTEE PREPARES REPORTWeb Posted: 17:41 GMT+2Washington, 07/03/1999 (MPA) The National Committee on US-Greek Relations has prepared a draft resolution expected to be sent to US President Bill Clinton, urging him to condemn recent statements by Turkish politicians who claim that Greece supports terrorism.The draft resolution states the committee's concern that such "silence regarding such inflammatory language will be misinterpreted as a green light to Ankara from Washington to continue, and perhaps escalate, the campaign against Greece." [07] KATERINA THANOU, WORLD SPRINT CHAMPIONWeb Posted: 17:34 GMT+2Maebashi, 07/03/1999 (MPA) Katerina Thanou, Greece's sprint champion, won the gold medal in the 60-meters final at the Indoor Athletics Championships in Maebashi, Japan, today.Ms. Thanou sprinted to the gold with a time of 6:96, followed by Gail Devers and Inger Miller, both of the U.S. Her win was the only medal awarded to a Greek athlete at the championships and her time is the fourth best ever recorded for the race.
