NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] WORLDNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] SIMITIS MEETING WITH CONSTANTINESCU AND STOYANOV IN DELPHIWeb Posted: 15:27 GMT+2Delphi, 03/10/1998 (MPA) A tripartite meeting of Greece, Romania and Bulgaria is being held in the archaeological site of Delphi today. In the meeting participate prime minister Kostas Simitis, Romanian president Emil Constantinescu and Bulgarian president Petar Stoyanov.The issues under discussion are the multi-faceted cooperation in south- eastern Europe, the regional stability and security. The meeting is being held in the presence of the foreign ministers of the three countries. Opening the meeting proceedings, Mr. Simitis stressed that the directly interested countries must undertake positive and not negative action in the Balkans, while Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos stressed that the initiatives that will be undertaken must have the approval of the UN Security Council. The three leaders will also discuss issues of economic and political cooperation such as, the promotion of common networks in communications and transportation as well as, the strengthening of Europe's relations with Bulgaria and Romania. Most European stock markets closed yesterday with big losses, while the Athens Stock Exchange suffered a heavy loss of 7.32%. [B] WORLD[04] HALBROOKE IS IN FAVOR OF A TWO-ZONE, TWO-COMMUNITY FEDERATION IN CYPRUSWeb Posted: 15:27 GMT+2New York, 03/10/1998 (MPA) US presidential envoy to Cyprus Richard Halbrooke reiterated the US position yesterday on the establishment of a two-zone, two-community federation on the island.Mr. Halbrooke stated that the US position has not changed, adding that Washington is in favor of a two-zone, two-community federation based on the UN resolutions. The US official met yesterday with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and stated that they discussed the problems dividing the two sides but he avoided to give more details because, as he said, their talks were private and confidential.
