    Strasbourg 7 February (MPA)

The Council of Europe calls on Turkey to give priority to the health and life of mothers and their children and not to military spending, based on a decision adopted by representatives of 40 European states in Strasbourg after a joint appeal made by the foreign ministers of Germany and France.

According to the responsible Council of Europe committee, mortality among mothers and children in Turkey is 10 times higher compared to a number of other countries.

Specifically, according to facts provided by the OECD, 100 mothers out of 100.000 and 60 infants out of 1.000 died in Turkey in 1993, while the average in most countries at the same period was 10 mothers out of 100.000 and 6 infants out of 1.000. Based on the data provided by the OECD, there are huge problems of illiteracy as well as, problems in the distribution of health services and in the access to the right health centers, while the number of families receiving health benefits is limited.
