NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] PREMIER WRAPS UP TOUR OF WESTERN MACEDONIAWeb Posted: 18:57 GMT+2Thessaloniki, October 19 (MPA)Greece's Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is to wrap up today his three-day tour of western Macedonia.The Premier is accompanied by a delegation of 11 ministers, five undersecretaries and secretaries-general with whom he reviewed various large projects currently in progress in the region and visited the Greek-Albanian border. In a address given in the city of Kastoria, Mr. Simitis assured the local authorities that the necessary development works will proceed as planned, among them the establishment of an airport, strengthening the fur industry, etc. Also, the Premier referred to the state's economic policy and stressed that it is not feasible to grant wage increases that would be in contract with the state's revenue policy, since gaining accession to the Economic and Monetary Union is the only way to avoid being left on the sidelines of the European Union. Lastly, Mr. Simitis also said that the inter-Balkan summit meeting should be established as an institution since it opens new opportunities in the Balkans.
