    [01] REPPAS: ONE OF THE GOVERNMENT PRIORITIES IS THE SUPPORT OF THE PROVINCIAL PRESS

    The government gives a priority to the support of the provincial press because it believes that this way assistance will also be offered to the Greek regions for their development, stated Minister of Mass Media and government spokesman Dimitris Reppas speaking in the 3rd Conference of the Association of Owners of Provisional Newspapers, which continues for a second day in Chania, Crete.

    Also, mr.Reppas announced a number of interventions and initiatives undertaken by the government such as, the recent implementation of the presidential decrees concerning the regional newspapers.

    In the conference participated main opposition party of New Democracy honorary president Konstantinos Mitsotakis and representatives of other opposition parties.

    Thessaloniki 27 September (MPA)

    The U2 were received ecstatically by thousands of their fans who flooded Thessaloniki's sea-front last night to attend their concert.

    Thessaloniki danced to the rhythm of this legendary rock group and one of the best moments of the concert was when the Greek flag was wrapped around Bono's guitar.

    For over 2 hours thousands of young people went wild with enthusiasm listening to the songs of the famous Irish group. When Bono said "Finally, we are playing in Greece" everyone went crazy.

    [03] THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH WILL BE IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki 27 September (MPA)

    Greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos, the political leadership and tens of Greek Metropolites will welcome Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Thessaloniki tomorrow with honors reserved for heads of states.

    The head of the Christian Orthodox Church will be accompanied by the Patriarchs of Georgia, Romania and Bulgaria and by a representative of the Patriarch of Moscow and All of Russia.

    Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who will be on a five-day visit to Greece, will meet with political party leaders, government ministers and Parliament deputies.

    [04] ANKARA THREATENS TO CANCEL THE SIMITIS-YILMAZ MEETING

    The United States clarified their statement regarding the International Court of Justice in The Hague. In a new statement US State Department spokesman James Roubin stressed that the statements he made two days ago referred only to the usefulness of international mechanisms for the settlement of differences such as Imia whenever they arise.

    Meanwhile, Ankara threatens to cancel the Simitis-Yilmaz meeting in Crete in November. Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem speaking in the state television left open the possibility for the meeting to be canceled.
