Prime Minister Kostas Simitis in his speech today, in the special meeting of the Central Committee on foreign affairs, issued an appeal to all the party officials to work closely together to achieve the national objectives and to form a policy of initiatives.Referring to the Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue, he said that the foreign policy followed by the government aims at strengthening the country's position in order for Turkey to be compelled to respect international law in the Aegean and to reach a viable solution for the Cyprus problem. On the Balkan countries, mr.Simitis said that they should not be outside the European developments. Finally, he said that Greece supports the struggle of the Cypriot people for freedom and vindication, adding that Greece will assist Cyprus in case of an aggressive attack by Turkey. Yesterday, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis spoke of PASOK's re-foundation and stressed that the party seeks the cooperation with all the center-left political forces in view of the local elections next year. The spokesman of the opposition party of New Democracy stated that on one hand the Prime Minister boasts about the supposed success of his government, while on the other he criticizes his government officials as being responsible for the inactivity in certain governmental sectors. There are 17 candidates for the presidency and if none of them gets over 50% of the votes, there will be a second round of voting in 15 days, between the two candidates who will get the most votes tomorrow. He also announced that a meeting will be held in New York next week between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots.Meanwhile, Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash reiterated the threats that if the EU starts the accession negotiations there will be countermeasures. Also, Ankara rejected the EU suggestion for the participation of a Turkish- Cypriot delegation in the talks for Cyprus' accession into the European Union.
