[A] NATIONAL NEWS
[01] THE GREEK ECONOMIC STAFF MEETS TODAY TO DISCUSS THE INFLATION COURSE
The pace of inflation is the main topic of discussion in today's
meeting of the government's economic staff in which are being
examined ways for the handling of the situation created as a
result of the deviation that is observed in the state budget
targets.
The meeting which is held with the participation of the two
Undersecretaries of Finance is presided over by National Economy
Minister Yiannos Papantoniou.
Mr.Papantoniou will brief the Prime Minister tomorrow, while new
measures are expected to be implemented for the speeding-up of the
collection of public revenues, the cutting down of public expenses
and the acceleration of privatizations.
[02] A US HOUSE DELEGATION WILL MEET WITH THE GREEK PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT
A US delegation made up of House Representatives Robert Menedez,
Alcee Hastings, Robert Andrews and Maurice Hinchey will meet
tomorrow with Greek Parliament President Apostolos Kaklamanis.
In the meeting will be present US Ambassador to Athens Thomas
Niles, the World Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, President Andrew
Athens and Cypriot Struggle World Coordinating Committee President
Philip Christopher.
The US House Representatives are also scheduled to visit Nicosia
to attend the proceedings of the World Conference of Cypriots
Living Abroad and to meet with the political leadership of Cyprus.
[03] OTE'S FIRST MOBILE PHONE WILL BE PRESENTED IN THESSALONIKI'S INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR
The presentation of the Greek State TeleCommunications
Organization, OTE, first mobile phone will be made in
Thessaloniki's International Trade Fair on September 6 and it will
be symbolically offered to Prime Minister Kostas Simitis.
The operation of the OTE mobile phone network will start from
Thessaloniki, initially covering the regions of Athens, Patras and
Thessaloniki and gradually will expand across the country.
[04] SEISMIC ACTIVITY INTENSIFIES IN GREECE - 27 MAJOR EARTHQUAKES ARE EXPECTED BY THE YEAR 2010
Twenty seven major earthquakes, measuring higher than 6 on the
Richter scale, will hit 26 regions in Greece by the year 2010,
according to seismologist Giorgos Karakaisis of the Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki Geophysics Laboratory who presented his
findings in the International Seismology Conference that is being
held in Thessaloniki.
Mr.Karakaisis stressed that this is a period of increased
earthquake activity and presented maps of regions saying that
there is a 9-80% likelihood for them to be hit by a devastating
earthquake.
[05] THE GREEK CULTURE MINISTER WILL VISIT JAPAN ON AUGUST 26
Greek Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos will visit Japan on
August 26 - September 1, to meet with Japanese Education and
Culture Minister Takasi Kofugi.
The visit, which will take place at the invitation of the Japanese
government, will be held while preparations are underway for the
100th anniversary of the Greek-Japanese diplomatic relations that
will be celebrated next year.
Mr.Venizelos is also scheduled to visit Sizuoka for the formal
opening of the Olympic Village facilities where the 1999 Olympiad
of Culture will be held.
[06] THESSALONIKI: FOREST RESTORED AFTER BIG FIRE
The works for the full restoration of the damages caused to the
forest around Thessaloniki on July 6-7 are progressing according
to official information today, just a few hours before the
Minister of Agriculture arrives for inspection tomorrow.
The big fire of July destroyed more that half of the forest which
is considered vital for the city.
[B] INTERNATIONAL NEWS
[07] THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL STANCE IS POSITIVE FOR THE GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE
The Greek-Cypriot and the Greek side are satisfied with the
briefing of the UN Security Council members on the Clerides-
Denktash talks in Montreaux, Switzerland that was made by UN
special envoy Diego Cordovez.
The British UN Security Council President praised mr.Clerides'
stance and underlined mr.Denktash's persistence on issues that
were not included in the agenda of the talks.
[08] THE ALBANIAN PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT WILL VISIT GREECE IN SEPTEMBER
Albanian Parliament President Skender Ginusi will visit Greece on
September 8-9.
In statements he made in Gjirokastra, mr.Ginusi said that he will
meet with his Greek counterpart and with the Greek political
leadership.
Meanwhile, a NATO delegation is visiting Tirana to assess the
needs of the Albanian armed forces before granting assistance.
[09] THE RELATIONS WITH GREECE, ITALY AND THE US ARE THE PRIORITY OF THE ALBANIAN FOREIGN POLICY
The position that the relations with the United States, Greece and
Italy are the priority of the Albanian government's foreign policy
was reiterated by Foreign Minister Paskal Milo in his speech
during the parliamentary External Affairs Committee meeting.
The Albanian Foreign Minister underlined that relations with
Greece and Italy have a great importance as they will open the
doors for Albania's accession into the European Union.
[10] THE SITUATION IN THE BOSNIAN SERB REPUBLIC CONTINUES TO BE TENSE
The situation in the Bosnian Serb Republic, where its president
ms.Biljana Plavsic accuses her rivals of plans for her
destruction, continues to be tense.
Meanwhile, NATO and international police forces searched the state
security building in Banja Luka and in it they found weapons that
were not registered.
[11] GENERAL MLADIC DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE WAR CRIMES TRIBUNAL IN THE HAGUE
General Mladic never regarded himself as being an accused and
never took under consideration the Special Tribunal in The Hague
for the war crimes committed in former Yugoslavia, stated to MPA
lawyer Alexandros Lykourezos, a personal friend of Mladic and
former Bosnian-Serb leader Radovan Karadjic, when he was asked to
comment on the appeal made by former international community envoy
to Bosnia Karl Bilt, who called the attorneys of those accused
with war crimes to contact the International Court.
Mr.Lykourezos stated that he has not met with general Mladic for
the past year and clarified that his professional relationship
with him concerned the organizing of certain contacts with the
West and that they have never discussed issues concerning his
defense in court.
[12] BULGARIAN ARMY OFFICERS CALL FOR THE OPENING OF THE EXOHI CUSTOMS OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Four Bulgarian army officers, who are visiting the northern Greek
city of Dramas at the invitation of colonel Ioannis Kalaigidis,
commander of the 65th Infantry Regiment, expressed the wish that
the customs office of Exohi should open as soon as possible.
In its meeting with Prefect of Dramas Sokratis Dimitriadis the
Bulgarian delegation referred to the important role the customs
office will play in the economic development of the neighbouring
regions and in the cooperation between Greece and Bulgaria.
[13] 15 SLOVAK PHOTOGRAPHERS WILL PRESENT THEIR WORK IN THESSALONIKI
The exhibition with the works of 15 Slovak photographers under the
title: ``The absurd, the Misleading and the Concrete'' will open in
Thessaloniki on August 27 within the framework of the cultural
events of the Organization Cultural Capital of Europe -
Thessaloniki '97.In the exhibition will be presented photographs
that display the direct relation of the language with the everyday
chores and artistic expression of the Slovak people .
