Mr.Simitis said that Greece succeeded in safeguarding its national interests and in achieving a framework of principles based on international law.In the Central Committee meeting under the theme "Administration - Local Administration", the Prime Minister also mentioned that the state and the administration must acquire a new content and come closer to the citizens. Speaking to journalists the presidents of the Pan-Macedonian Associations of America, Australia, Europe and Canada expressed concern over the stagnation observed in the issue of FYROM's name and called on the government and the political world in Greece to become more active in an effort to find an immediate solution to the issue. [03] REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PAN-MACEDONIAN ASSOCIATIONS MET WITH THE MINISTER OF MACEDONIA-THRACEWeb Posted: 16:20 GMT+2Thessaloniki 19 July (MPA)Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos stated during his meeting with representatives of Pan-Macedonian Associations and Federations from America, Canada, Australia and Europe, that Greece will never accept the use of the name Macedonia by FYROM. Mr.Petsalnikos added that the international name of FYROM does not depend on the decisions and wishes of the Greek people and for this reason Greece has launched an international campaign to stop the recognition of FYROM under the name Macedonia.The Minister of Macedonia-Thrace stated that the 7th World Conference of the Pan-Macedonian Associations is being held at a very important and crucial time due to the changes that took place in the Balkans and the Black Sea region in the last few years. Mr.Petsalnikos also announced the names of those who will be honoured with the "Alexander the Great" and "Aristotle" awards, instituted by the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace. The award ceremony will be held in September and the "Alexander the Great" prize will be received by President of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Benzamin O'Hara, former Prime Minister of Australia Paul Keating and British Labour Party deputy Eddie O'Hara. With the "Aristotle" prize will be honoured Canadian expert on International Issues Ted McQeen and Greek scholars Norman Aston from Australia and Hans Bander from Austria. [06] INCREASED NUMBER OF YUGOSLAV TOURISTS WANT TO VISIT GREECEWeb Posted: 16:20 GMT+2Belgrade 19 July (MPA)The abolition of the visa requirement for the Yugoslavs depends on an EU decision and Greece will back such a decision, stated the Press Counsellor of the Greek Embassy in Belgrade mr.Spyridon Hatzaras. In an interview with the newspaper "Vetsernji Novosti", mr.Hatzaras stated that Greece as an EU member has to respect its regulations and the exisiting status of relations between the EU and other countries based on the Schengen accord.It is estimated that the Greek Embassy issues 1.500-2.500 visas daily for Yugoslavs who want to spend their vacations in Greece and people have to stand in line for at least 12 hours. [07] FOREIGN INVESTMENTS IN BULGARIA REACHED 307,28 MILLION DOLLARS IN THE FIRST HALF OF 1997Web Posted: 16:20 GMT+2Sofia 19 July (MPA)The Bulgarian government intends to privatize 5803 businesses by the end of 1997 and expects revenues of 601 billion lev.According to the weekly polical-economic magazine "Sega" in Sofia, the revenues from the privatizations in the first five months of 1997 have reached 257 million dollars, while in 1995 and 1996 the revenues were 113 and 200 million dollars respectivelly. Also, foreign investments in Bulgaria reached 307,28 million dollars in the first half of 1997. [08] THE BEHAVIOUR OF TURKEY TOWARD THE KURDS IS KEEPING THE COUNTRY OUTSIDE THE EUWeb Posted: 16:20 GMT+2The Hague 19 July (MPA)A four-page correspondence from Damascus and Istanbul on the Kurdish issue was published in the latest issue of the magazine "Elsevler". It is mentioned that the Kurdish problem, even though it is not a priority in the international agenda, has much more dangerous dimensions than the Palestinian uprising which has attracted greater interest. It is also mentioned that many young Kurds in western Europe are leaving their homes there to fight for Kurdistan.The magazine stresses that in spite of the show of force displayed by the Turkish side, the Workers' Party of Kurdistan, known as PKK, has proved that it is invincible, while it mentions that the recent Turkish invasion of northern Iraq was a fiasco. Meanwhile, the newspaper "De Volkskrant" republishes a "New York Times" article according to which, one of the biggest obstacles for Turkey's accession into the EU is the Kurdish issue.
