Mr. Papandreou stated that the biggest hurdle that has come up so far is related to institutional matters and to the flexibility clause , while all signs show that the issue of a common political defense will advance to a certain degree. On the matter of a common foreign policy, Mr. Papandreou stressed that Greece is pleased with the current status and does not wish to open a discussion on the matter of the borders. France is insisting that final decisions be drawn on unemployment and threatens that it will otherwise block the process of the monetary union's first phase. On the other hand, Germany is trying to steer the talks away from addressing the plight of joblessness. The Premier of Luxembourg, set to take over the EU's presidential post, proposed that another summit be held in October to deal exclusively with the issue of unemployment. [D] WORLD[05] THE 4TH WORLD CONFERENCE OF GREEKS FROM PONTUS CLOSES TODAYWeb Posted: 14:59 GMT+2Thessaloniki, June 16 (MPA)The Greeks from Pontus living throughout the world should remain united, stated today the president of the parliamentary cross-party committee for Greeks from Abroad Grigoris Niotis, addressing the 4th World Conference of Greeks from Pontus, held in Thessaloniki.Mr. Niotis stated that in order to achieve the targets that have been set, unity is one of the most basic pre-requisites. He also announced that during the following two months the Greek government is to take support measures for the 200,000 refugees from the former Soviet Union, as well as for the 50,000 Greeks who live in Black Sea countries. The three-day Conference, which is to close today, was held in an effort to illustrate the struggles and the claims of these two million people throughout the world, but foremostly to achieve the actual recognition of the genocide of the Greeks from Pontus by the Turks during the early 1900s. According to the president of the Northern Greece Pontus Associations Stephanos Tanimanides, one of the Conference's aims is to illustrate the input of the official Turkish state in this genocide. Aside from tabling a proposal to the United Nations for the recognition of the genocide, the Conference also looked into the creation of an international body that will be assigned with the task of executing the decisions to be drawn. The conference, featuring the participation of 800 delegates from throughout the world, was declared open by the Minister of Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization Alekos Papadopoulos. Among the Pontus organizations represented at the Conference are those from the former Soviet Union, the United States, Australia, Africa, Sweden and Switzerland.
