    Thessaloniki, the Metropolis of the Balkans is at the center of developments. The capital of Macedonia plays the role it deserves, becoming the bridge that links Greece with the other Balkan countries.

    The meeting of Balkan mayors is being held today with main subject the preservation of peace and security in the region. On Monday and Tuesday, the Balkan Foreign Ministers will discuss the creation of a common market, while on the same days businessmen from all the Balkan countries will discuss the privatisations of big companies.

    The Council of Europe welcomes the Greek initiative for the first meeting of Balkan mayors in Thessaloniki which is aimed at promoting the development and cooperation in the region.

    The President of the Local and Regional European Authorities' Congress stated that this is a very positive initiative in a region, which is a challenge in the efforts to build the basis for the economic success that is necessary for peace.

    Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis referred to the need for viable and lasting solutions for peace in Europe, speaking in the European Socialist Party Conference in Malmo, Sweden.

    Mr.Simitis asked for the adoption of policies in the Balkans that will make peace in the region permanent and not a temporary and precarious outcome.

    Main Greek opposition party of New Democracy honorary President Konstantinos Mitsotakis met with Turkish President Suleiman Demirel in Ankara and discussed the Cyprus issue, the appointment of US envoy Richard Holbrooke and the political developments in Turkey.

    Meanwhile, New Democracy President Kostas Karamanlis met in Brussels yesterday with three EU Commissioners and discussed issues concerning the Inter-Governmental Conference and the course toward the European monetary union.

    [05] THE BULGARIAN MAYORS ARE SATISFIED WITH THE COOPERATION THEY HAVE WITH THEIR GREEK COUNTERPARTS

    The mayors and local administration officials from the Bulgarian cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Blagoevgrad, in statements they made to MPA, expressed satisfaction for their participation in the meeting of Balkan local administration representatives, while they also expressed hope for the further development of the inter-Balkan cooperation.

    Mr.Nicolai Gantsev, Sofia Municipality Cultural Committee President referred to the cooperation of the municipality of Sofia with the municipalities of Athens, Voula and Elefsina, while he called for assistance in order for the Bulgarian capital to overcome the problems it faces.

    Mayor of Blagoevgrad mr.Konstantin Paskalev expressed gratitude to the Municipality of Neapolis for its support and humanitarian aid, while the mayor of Plovdiv mr.Milko Tsvetkovski stressed the close cooperation with the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Finally, Cultural Committee President in the municipality of Varna, mr.Pavel Pavlov referred to the international events held in Varna and to the notable Greek participation.

    [06] THE MAYOR OF BITOLA SEES QUICK SOLUTION OF THE PYRAMID INVESTMENT SCHEMES PROBLEM

    Mayor of Bitola mr.Silian Mitsevski, who is in Thessaloniki on the occasion of the Balkan Local Administration representatives meeting, stated to MPA that he believes a solution will be found soon to the problem of the pyramid investment schemes in FYROM.

    Mr.Mitsevski stated that there is optimism that the problems of the people who lost their savings, will be solved soon and stressed that now the people have come to realize that themselves are partly responsible for the situation because they had trusted their money to such investment schemes.

    [07] THE CYPRIOT FOREIGN MINISTER MET WITH THE US SECRETARY OF STATE

    Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kasoulides met in Washington yesterday with US Secretary of State ms.Albright.

    According to statements made after the meeting by US State Department spokesman Nicolas Burns, ms.Albright expressed concern that the possible deployment of missiles in Cyprus will have a distabilizing effect on the region because other countries will adopt countermeasures.

    Mr.Kasoulides expressed satisfaction for the appointment of Richard Holbrooke to the position of the US President's special envoy to Cyprus, while he stressed that Nicosia will start negotiations with the Turkish- Cypriot side next month.
