    The Greek government rejected the Dutch EU Presidency proposal for the holding of a meeting of Greek and Turkish experts on May 26 as well as, all the NATO proposals for the confidence-building-measures in the Aegean.

    Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos in a letter to Dutch Foreign Minister Van Mierlo insists that the three known terms set by Greece constitute a necessary precondition for Athens to lift its veto on the EU funds for Turkey.

    [02] A SUPREME COURT OF APPEAL PROSECUTOR WILL INVESTIGATE ACCUSATIONS CONCERNING THE CULTURAL CAPITAL ORGANIZATION

    Supreme Court of Appeal prosecutor Dimitris Doris will be in Thessaloniki on Monday to investigate the recent accusations made by a judge concerning the handling of investigations on the Cultural Capital of Europe case.

    Mr.Doris will meet with Court of Appeals prosecutor Dimitris Sideris who is handling two preliminary investigations on the issue of the Cultural Capital Organization operation since March of 1995.

    [03] EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 3,8 ON THE RICHTER SCALE IN KOZANI

    An earthquake measuring 3,8 on the Richter scale was recorded this morning near the city of Kozani in north-western Greece.

    The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysics Laboratory announced that the tremor's epicenter was located 18 kilometers south-west of the city and according to local authorities no damages were reported.

    The National Opera of Romania charmed last night the audience of Thessaloniki with its presentation of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" held within the framework of the Cultural Capital of Europe events.

    The solists of the event baritone Lucian Marinescu, tenor Robert Nagy and soprano Andriana Mestes were applauded long and loud as well as, orchestra director Rasvan Cernat, choreographer Alexa Mezinescu, chorus director Stelian Olariu, the head dancers and the 60-member chorus.

    [05] BERISHA DISSOLVED THE ALBANIAN PARLIAMENT

    The situation in Albania reached a new deadlock. President Berisha ordered yesterday the dissolution of Parliament after he signed the electoral law approved by the Parliament without the participation of the opposition political parties.

    The opposition threatens to boycott the elections maintaining that the new electoral law favours Berisha's party.

    [06] CLERIDES-DENKTASH MEETING WILL BE HELD IN NEW YORK AT THE END OF JUNE

    Direct talks on the Cyprus issue between Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will be held in New York at the end of June or in early July, according to a United Nations' statement.

    The assistant of the UN Secretary General stated that the two leaders are ready to accept a UN Secretary General invitation for direct talks.

    [07] THE RUSSIAN COMMUNIST PARTY LEADER SUPPORTS A FAIR AND VIABLE SOLUTION FOR THE CYPRUS PROBLEM

    Russian Communist party leader Genadi Zuganov met with Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides in Nicosia and expressed the position that his country should play a greater role in the solution of the problems in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

    Mr.Zuganov reiterated that Russia supports a fair and viable solution for the Cyprus problem which will safeguard the territorial integrity of Cyprus and the protection of human rights.

    Referring to the military agreement between Israel and Turkey and to the promotion by the US of a new world order, mr.Zuganov stated that they can lead to an escalation of the crisis in the region. He also added that the countries of the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Europe and the Russian Federation must work to defuse the tensions.

    Also, mr.Zuganov characterized the agreement for the expansion of NATO eastwards as the biggest mistake of Europe since the Second World War.
