    [A01] MISSIONS OF HUMANITARIAN HELP FROM GREECE CONTINUE

    Greek state sector and non governmental organizations continue their efforts towards the collection of as much humanitarian help as possible for the refugees of Kraina. Today three more C-130 left for Belgrade carrying 18 tonnes of foodstuff, medicine and clothes each. These six flights concluded the first phase of humantarian missions which amounted totally to 130 tonnes. Belgrade press give long coverage pf the greek missions which upto-now have been the only missions of humanitarian help. In Athens the foreign ministry has opened bank accounts for all those who wish to help financially the collection of things for refugees while the Greco-Serbian Friendhsip Association announced that a new mission of humanitarian help will start at the end of the month. Famous Greek lawyer mr Alexandros Likourezos, who has been personally authorised by Bosnianserb General Ratko Mladic to collect aid for his people, made today an appeal to all Greeks to help this effort. In Thessaloniki, one of the most aknowledged Greek doctors, heart surgeon mr Panayiotis Spirou announced that soon he will visit the refugees and operate on them. Mr Spirou said that he has started collecting all the neccessary material for his presense in Yugoslavia. At the same time a lot of non-governmental organizations have been collecting humanitarian help for the refugees.

    [A02] MP.SPIRIUNIS OUTSIDE THE GOVERNMENTAL PARLIAMENTARY GROUP

    Governmental PASOK MP mr Kiriakos Spiriunis was set today outside the parliamentary group of the governing Socialists after a letter the President of the party and Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou sent to the Speaker of the Parliament. Mr Papandreou's letter followed the desicion taken yesterday by the authority council of the party according to which the MP's statements on the necessity for mr Papandreou's succesion offended the founder of the party. According to the authority council, it is the cental committee of the party which should decide on the fate of mr Spiriunis's, an exGeneral of the Greek army, who has been elected MP of Thessaloniki in the last three parliamentary elections. Meanwhile, members of the central Committee of the party express their disagreement with the reference and say that they will vote against it when it comes to it. It is expected that the central committee of the party will discuss the reference in its next session, probably in September, while the MP today attacked against Prime Minister's wife on her ambition to enter politics.

    [A03] GREECE BACK FROM THE BRINK SAYS ECONOMIST FOREIGN REPORT

    For the first time in years, Greece has professional bankers rather than quarrelsome politicians loking after its public finances according to an article published in the latest issue of the "Economist' s Foreign Report". According to the article, the effects have been positive, bankers and risk analysts are less gloomy, foreign borrowing has been over-subscribed and as one banker put it: "Greece no longer looks like a candidate for financial disaster". Foreign Report says that "the central bank govenor, Loukas Papadimos, keeps a low profile. This is good for the drachma, which has remained surprisingly stable over the past year (it declined by only 3% last year against other European currencies) and adds that mr Papadimos, then deputy governor of the Bank of Greece, masterminded the defence of the drachma during a three week currency crisis in May 1994 by advising Greek banks to raise shortterm rates to record levels. The strategy worked. With short-term rates ranging from 60% to 100%, drachmas disappeared from the money market, speculators were discouraged from attacking the currency and 2 devaluation was avoided. The article also makes reference to "mr Nikos Kyriazides, a former senior International Monetary Fund official advising the government on foreign borrowing who was promoted to undersecretary at the finance ministry to tackle the problem of Greece's outside public debt, which has grown to 115% per cent of GDP. To service the debt, the finance ministry has to keep interest rates high enough to encourage investors to buy government bonds every month. But high interest rates increase the cost of servicing the debt. Kyriazides has managed to cut rates on government bonds by almost seven percentage points over the past year, making big savings. Confidence in the drachma is strong. Greece's foreign exchange reserves are at record levels Kyriazides is introducing modern methods of debt management which will reduce financing costs further".

    [A04] GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER PAPOULIAS TO VISIT MOSCOW ON SATURDAY

    Greek Foreign Minister, mr Karolos Papoulias will leave on Saturday morning for Moscow where he will have talks with his Russian counterpart, mr Andrei Kozirev on the crisis in Bosnia. The greek government supports the initiative undertaken by russian President Boris Yeltsin who invited the Presidents of Serbia and Croatia for talks in Moscow. The russian and the greek governments agree that a political solution can be found for Bosnia not through military means but through peaceful negotiations. The Foreign Ministers of Russia and Greece will examine the situation that has been created and will exchange views on the necessary steps that will lead to the defusion of the crisis. It should be noted that the two Foreign Ministers are in constant communication. Last Tuesday, mr.Papoulias and mr.Koziref had a long telephone conversation and as it was announced mr.Koziref will make an official visit to Athens on September 8th.

    [A06] HOUSES GIVEN TO TURKISH-CYPRIOT UNLAWFUL BENEFICIARIES

    The turkish-cypriot authorities in the turkish occupied part of Cyprus will transfer about 1 thousand houses to unlawful "beneficiaries". The turkish-cypriot newspaper "Yeni Duzen" writes that according to a so-called Housing Bill, those living in refugee and working class residences will receive "ownership certificates". According to the newspaper, based on the draft law over one thousand families will acquire a permanent residence. The draft law has been introduced to the so- called "Parliament" and will be discussed in the next few days.
