Two years that demand bold decisions on specific targets: - to ease the repercussions of the global financial crisis, - to make sure that Greece's economy stands strong, and - to lay down solid foundations for the day after. The key quandary for the citizens is crystal clear: to choose between the tough and responsible path that will yield results in the battle against the global crisis and the easy and irresponsible path that leave impasses in its wake. Those trying to be pleasant today will weigh down the citizens with huge burdens tomorrow. The measures needed to be taken then will be much harsher than the ones we are proposing. Therefore the path of responsibility is the only path. Time must not be wasted. We have to take bold steps, saying things as they really are. Responsibility is a duty to the future of us all. Irresponsibility is a luxury that the nation cannot endure Therefore, I submitted an integrated three-pillar plan: Stricter checks on public spending. Fight to stamp out tax evasion. Structural changes that pave the way for new structures. Shifting his attention to the main opposition party of PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement), Karamanlis stressed: Despite the unprecedented crisis, there are political powers that refuse to submit proposals and action plans. There are political power that keep twisting, deceiving and leveling. The main opposition party has engaged in a race of equivocation and promises. Instead of presenting a plan, they resort to wishful thinking. Instead of proposing solutions, they mete out promises. Instead of living up to the major challenge of the global crisis, they pretend there are no perils to be tackled. When it comes to real economy, they say and unsay, they promise and retract. News item: 26677 [02] PASOK: The Answer to Financial CrisisPASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) President George Papandreou is expected to outline an immediate 100-day plan for the economy, as well as the key points of his governance plan at his speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair. News item: 26682 [06] Turkey Hit by Deadly FloodingNewsThe storm that hit NW Turkey in the early hours of Saturday caused fresh damage and problems to the residents. After two hour of torrential rain, the outskirts of Istanbul were flooded. The Erdogan administration and the Istanbul Mayor pledged to restore damage, however, the 33 casualties and the slow response of the state authorities have trigger strong reactions. Another two hours of heavy rain were added up to the nightmare experienced in eastern Istanbul in the middle of the week. Families were trapped in their flooded houses and were saved thanks to the painstaking efforts of the firefighters. This time, authorities had promptly sounded the alarm and thousand men had been deployed in the streets. A bridge outside Istanbul collapsed, while major problems were reported in nearby towns. About 100 people were seized for looting. Anger and indignation against the Erdogan administration is flaring up, since it failed to conduct anti-flooding measures and allowed building activities to go wild. Accusations are being made against the Prime Minister himself, with his rivals reminding that he was mayor in Istanbul when the building spree was in full swing.
