  • [01] Recording Damage & Pressing Charges

Crews have started cleaning the roads amid a really stuffy atmosphere caused by the tear gases thrown, while Athens looks like a bombarded city. The Athens Traders Association head Panagis Karellas told NET radio station that the businessmen whose shops were badly damaged are to file lawsuits against the state, as they hold it responsible for the situation. Crews of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Athens Traders Associations have started recording the damage caused in businesses located in central Athens. In the meantime, five of the 92 arrestees have been charged with felonies and misdemeanors. The five arrestees were given until Thursday to testify.

Even monuments situated in the centre of Athens fell prey to the rioters' rage. The house of prominent 20th-century poet Kostis Palamas was set ablaze, while Greece's cultural heritage, the National Library, was seriously threatened. Deeply frustrated, Rector of the Athens University Christos Kittas resigned, protesting against the authorities' slow response in protecting the University.

    [02] Papandreou Wants Snap Elections

The government must go and the country should resort to snap elections, Socialist leader George Papandreou told his MPs on Tuesday. The government has lost the Greek people's trust, stressed Papandreou, further underlining that the country is experiencing a deep crisis and the government has nothing new to add. Things have turned really bleak, since fear and insecurity have prevailed noted he. Papandreou then went on to condemn the rioting, stressing that democracy and the struggle for rights cannot hide behind hoods.

The only service the government can offer to the country is to step down, stressed Papandreou, while addressing Tuesday the sitting of the party's Parliamentary Group, demanding elections, so that the people can provide a solution.

The Socialist President claimed that he stressed in the meeting with Karamanlis that Greek society is undergoing a multiple crisis, one that was economic, social and a crisis of values and institutions. The government is unable to deal with this crisis because it has lost the confidence of the Greek people, he added.

He also blasted the government for using insecurity and fear, holding accountable the others, without shouldering its own responsibilities.

He further added there are no asymmetric threats and what destabilizes the government is its own policy, since it gave priority to its own benefit over the wider good.

"There is no future with this government," he concluded, stressing that the future for Greece lay with a government of change.
