The final vote for Bushs plan at the House of Representatives was 228 to 205 against. Despite the fact that the typical procedure was not observed, the vote was extended in an attempt to invert the climate through feverish deliberations. The news was followed by a sharp drop in the Wall Street and a 4.7% drop in Dow Jones, while Nasdaq dropped by 7%. In an announcement the White House expressed the government's disappointment, stressing that the difficult crisis should be dealt with at all costs. President Bush promised a head-on attack to the problem, adding that he would have a meeting with top officials to decide on their further moves. He also said that he supports the UN initiatives for the resolution of the Cyprus issue, adding that with Dimetres Christofias as President new prospects for the Cyprus Republic will open. Cyprus should take advantage of its EU membership and the Community patrimony, within the context of which a just and European solution should be found. Regarding the FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) name-issue he reiterated that one composite name with a geographic qualifier should be used and not double names.
