[03] Mass Evacuations as Typhoon Hits China

    24 2008 10:10:00

Chinese authorities have evacuated over 30.000 people from the southern province Guangdong as powerful typhoon Hagupit hit the area at 06:45 local time. Hagupit whipped past Hong Kong overnight, uprooting trees, causing flash floods with dozens of people injured and cancelling many flights. Chinese Meteorological Administration has issued an "urgent red alert," its highest-level warning. Over 50.000 VESSELS have been called back ports. Authorities forecast heavy rainfall and floods in some regions. The worst typhoon to hit Guangdong in more than a decade closed all schools and kindergartens in the coastal city of Zhanjiang, where gales and rain left most streets deserted even in the morning rush hour. The storm killed at least eight people in the Philippines earlier in the week.

    Fresh Bloody Clashes in Somalia

    24 2008 09:20:00

    Sources: ANA, Reuters

Islamist launched attacks in an African Union (AU) peacekeeping base in Mogadishu, killing at least 7 civilians. Fierce attacks were reported yesterday in the AU union from various sides. Fires and tank incursions killed civilians into a market area viewed as a rebel stronghold.

"A big shell killed five people after it landed on them as they ran to take cover," witness Osman Farah said. "They ran from their house, which was weak, but unfortunately they were all crushed. We have just collected their corpses."

Taleh residents reported that buildings were destroyed and fires broke out burning shops. Death toll is still unknown. Many residents are abandoning Mogadishu as clashes escalate. For two decades now the city has turned into a battlefield. About one million Somalis live as internal refugees in what aid agencies call one of the worlds worst humanitarian crises.

Islamists demand the withdrawal of Ethiopia armed forces from Somalia. AU preserves a 3.000 men "peace force" in Mogadishu while 8.000 more are to be sent. 3,2 million of Somali are in need of immediate help as except of the bloody clashes drought has also hit their city.
