Sources: ANA-MPA, BBC, REUTERS

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama named veteran Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden, head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, his presidential running mate.

Biden, a Roman Catholic law expert from Pennsylvania, is believed to bring his expertise in foreign policy and his strong ties with the working class.

Obamas rival, John McCain has yet to pick his running mater. He is expected to do so on 29 August, a day after the closing session of the Democratic Congress which has been scheduled for the coming week.

    By Thanasis Karlos

Greek fighter Kyriaki Kouvari did not make it at the preliminaries of the Womens +67 weight class in Taekwondo, as she was downed 3-1 by Natália Falavigna of Brazil. Having landed fourth place at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the Brazilian girl advanced to the quarterfinals and depending on her results, Kouvari may or may not stand a second chance.

    [03] Nicolaides in Quarterfinals

    23 2008 09:30:00

    By Thanasis Karlos

On day four of the Olympic Taekwondo competition, Alexandros Nicolaides of Greece overpowered Chilmanov Arman of Kazakhstan 4-3 in the fourth round in the preliminaries of the Mens +80kg weight class.

Rather stressed in the beginning, the Athens 2004 silver medallist had to fight four rounds before making his way to the quarterfinals. He will now play against Abdelkader Zrouri of Morocco, a silver medallist at the 2005 World Championships and a bronze one at the 2007 Championships.
