    Greek Socialist Party in Turmoil

The reactions prompted by Socialist President George Papandreous decision to have former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis ousted from PASOKs (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) parliamentary group are quite interesting.

According to three surveys published in the Sunday press, PASOK voters appear divided on the question whether Papandreous move was right and whether PASOK will earn from that, while half of the respondents believe that the party will be divided. The debate on the Lisbon Treaty scheduled for Tuesday in Parliament is much anticipated, as it is set to unveil the stance of those who disagree with Papandreous decision.

In the meantime, more and more leading party officials are taking a stand on the matter.

Simitis letter gives the impression that the party has to agree with him, Socialist deputy Theodoros Pangalos told Eleftheros Typos paper, further adding that the composition of the parliamentary group is up to the partys president. He also said he was sorry for being the same political party with some who view the party as a power-controlling mechanism.

PASOK is experiencing one of its most difficult and saddest moments in its history, commented Petros Efthymiou in his interview with Sunday paper Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia. Cooperation and understanding between Simitis and Papandreou proved hard to be achieved, argued Efthymiou, who appeared, nevertheless, optimistic about the partys unity.

Ousting Simitis revealed panic and fear, PASOK MP Tassos Giannitsis told Sunday paper Ethnos tis Kyriakis. The former Foreign Minister paralleled PASOKs course with the King character of major Greek writer Penelope Deltas novel "A Tale with No Name," while he did not ruled out the scenario speaking of division.

In his interview with Ethnos tis Kyriakis, PASOK parliament spokesman Christos Papoutsis spoke of an ill introversion and information mechanisms that undermine PASOK. Dismissing personal stances and the hypocrisy of a fake unity, Papoutsis believes there is no room for a new party.

Despite avoiding commenting on the crisis plaguing the Socialist party, SYN (Coalition of the Radical Left) President Alexis Tsipras told Ethnos tis Kyriakis paper that SYN is proved to be the only reliable alternative.

Nine people have been recovered dead and 200 have been reported as injured, following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on Saturday morning. Road networks and houses were badly damaged. Earlier, a crack in a dam had forced rescue workers to evacuate the surrounding area and abandon their efforts to pull a man to safety. Almost 3000 people have been left without water. As per the authorities, more than 260 aftershocks followed the main one.
