[01] Deadly Aftershock in China

Sundays aftershock in China killed at least six people and injured 400 hundred, 20 of which seriously, while at least 70,000 buildings were destroyed in Sichuan province. The 8-magnitude quake has killed over 62,000 people in total. Meanwhile, in an attempt to prevent any destructive floods, Chinese troops have begun work to unblock a lake formed by a landslide during the devastating earthquake in Sichuan province. About 1,800 soldiers carried explosives to Tangjiashan lake where they will try to blast away debris, state media said.

[02] Nightmarish Situation in Naples

The people headed by Mayors, who are refusing the operation of landfills in their areas without prior negotiations, are holding rallies two weeks after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconis swearing-in ceremony. Mr Berlusconi has adopted a tough line to solve the crisis in Naples.

The situation in Chiaiano has remained tense since Friday with residents appearing determined to resist the use of a local stone quarry as a landfill

Meawnhile, 12 people were injured on Friday and Saturday in clashes with the police. Three demonstrators have been placed under house confinement because they had attacked the authorities.

While the prime minister insists that the problem should resolved, many municipalities such as those of Sere and Tetzinio, which have been facing a 15-year-long crisis with the rubbish problem, are refusing to accept in their areas more rubbish. Chiaiano municipality is about to receive 700,000 tonnes of refuse.

[03] Myanmar: On with the Referendum

The US is criticizing the military regime on proceeding with the second phase of the referendum on the ratification of the Constitution in five cyclone-hit areas at a time when the victims are expecting to receive aid. Meanwhile, on Sunday the international community asked from the authorities to allow foreign humanitarian teams to offer their aid to the needy people. At the same time, Myanmars Embassy in Bangkok is not issuing any entry visas, as a fire has broken out in one of its buildings.

[04] Explosion Kills 30 in Iran

An explosion and fire at a chemical plant near the city of Arak in central Iran has killed 30 people and injured more than 40, IRNA reports. The injured, most of who with heavy burns were transferred to the nearest hospitals. The accident happened at 1600 in the plant near Arak, south-west of Tehran. A container holding 60,000 litres of flammable products exploded during welding work nearby and the fire quickly spread.

The region is home to much of Irans industry, including one of its key nuclear sites, a heavy-water reactor under construction close to Arak.
