Sylvio Berlusconi, Italys right party leader has won a third term in office gathering 45.47% of votes over 40.16% of his center-left rival Walter Veltroni according to official results transmitted by state television after the counting of votes of about 20% of the polling stations. Italys interior Ministry website clarifies that these results have come from the count of 12.333 polling stations. A total of 60.048 polling stations were open during the two-day elections in Italy. Pollsters projections based on early results by Ipsos Institute showed Sylvio Berlusconi would win a big majority in both houses of parliament 46.5% and the main centre-left party of Walter Veltroni 37.7%. Berlusconi had been widely expected to win the lower house easily. But a clear victory in the Senate would be an added bonus strengthening his ability to push through structural reforms needed to pull Italy away from the brink of recession. The leader of the center right party Walter Veltroni admitted defeat late this evening " The elections result is clear. The right party will take office".
