Addressing a Congress committee, top US commander in Iraq David Petraeus suggested a 45-day halt of the US pullout from Iraq. Petraeus says a 45-day period is needed to reassess the state of the war once the last of the five so-called "surge" brigades has gone home at the end of July. "At the end of that period, we will commence a process of assessment to examine the conditions on the ground and, over time, determine when we can make recommendations for further reductions," he said.
