Mottaki Holds Contacts in Tokyo Discussions on Nuclear Programme27 Feb 2006 07:24:00As of Monday morning, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Manouchehr Mottaki is in Japan, in order to hold contacts with the political leadership, on the issue of developing its nuclear programme. The visit is made shortly after yesterdays announcement that Iran reached a "basic" agreement with Russia for the joint enrichment of uranium. However, Tehran insisted that the enrichment of uranium, which is extracted from its mines, to be made on its soil, and it is still uncertain how the initial proposal of Moscow will satisfy Iran. Japan, which today buys approximately 500,000 barrels of Iranian oil daily and continues to have excellent relations with the Islamic Republic, will try to convince Iran to dispel the concerns of the international community, in relation to its nuclear aspirations, in order to avoid the imposing of penalties against it by the UN. The special body of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will convene on 6 March and examine the latest report over Irans nuclear activities. The conclusion of this meeting will depend on if the US and the EU will pressure the UN to impose penalties against Iran.
