  • [01] Olympiakos Won the Derby

    15 Jan 2006 21:04:00

    By Stathis Petropoulos

The anxiety that weighed down both Olympiakos fans and coach regarding Rivaldos participation in todays derby proved pretty groundless, since it was the Brazilian super star that earned Olympiakos the victory in one of the most fascinated derbies between the two "eternal rivals." Olympiakos 3-2 victory against Panathinaikos shot their difference up to 12 points, and it now seems that AEK is the only obstacle in Olympiakos way to this years title. Panathinaikos took the lead when Gonzales succeeded in the penalty kick in the 21. However, Rivaldo had not said his final word and with two goals in the 38 and 58 brought the situation upside down. In the 73, Konstantinou scored a third goal for Olympiakos. The final 3-2 scored was achieved by Gekas of Panathinaikos in the 74.

Referee: Kalopoulos (Thessaloniki) Yellow Cards: Nikopolidis, Okkas, Pantos Flavio Conceicao, Gekas, Gonzales, Seric, Darlas, Tziolis

OLYMPIAKOS: Nikopolidis, Pantos, Anatolakis, Schurrer, Bulut, Georgatos (59 Castillo), Stoltidis, Rivaldo (90+ Kostoulas), Djordjevic, Okkas (88 Kafes), Konstantinou.

PANATHINAIKOS: Galinovic, Vintra, Biscan, Morris, Darlas (77 Mantzios), Tziolis, Gonzales, Flavio Conceicao (70 Leontiou), Gekas, Seric (57 Haralabidis), Papadopoulos.

A new era for Greek television begins on Monday, with the beginning of transmission of the first digital television programmes by ERT, initially in Attica and in a pilot stage. "Prisma Plus" will be the first channel to normally operate in March. "Prisma Plus" is a multi-collective channel allowing access to the disabled. "Cine Plus" will start operation in April and "Sport Plus" in May.

The pilot program, which is scheduled to last two years, provides for each channel to broadcast novel programmes for six up to ten hours daily. The programmes, will then be rebroadcast.

Former Deputy Minister of Public Order Christos Markogiannakis addressed an open rally at Chania. Mr Markogiannakis made it clear that it was not intra-party rivalry that prompted his resignation. He then went on to thank Public Order Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis and Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis by stating that he has not lost faith in Mr Karamanlis. Upon stepping on the podium, Mr Markogiannakis threw flowers at the people summoned, while a friend of his gave him a Cretan lyre. On Saturday, he made a joint appearance with MP Stelios Nikiforakis, thus denying rumours of an internal dispute in New Democracy. In interviews with Sunday newspapers, Mr Markogiannakis reiterated his criticism against Supreme Court Prosecutor Dimitris Linos, saying that he is not doing a good job.

    "Some Actions were Wrong"

In two interviews with Sundays editions of To Vima and Eleftherotypia, Mr Markogiannakis criticised some actions of Mr Linos, saying that they were wrong, particularly the order for a preliminary investigation into the death of the Russian criminal.

"He should learn how to do his job well," stated Mr Markogiannakis, accusing Mr Linos of a leak of his actions, which provided television news programmes.

On the statement that led to his resignation, Mr Markogiannakis repeated that he made it in a private group of friends, however he added that he should not have used such expressions.

In closing, he made special mention to Giorgos Voulgarakis, saying he is an excellent politician and will be very useful in Greek society in the future.

A rally against racism was staged on Sunday morning on the occasion of the murder of an 18-year-old Albanian national on New Years Day in Rethymno, Crete. The demonstrators gathered at Omonia Square and marched to Greek Parliament. The rally was co-organised by Unions of Albanians living in Athens and Greek organizations fighting for the rights of immigrants. The immigrants voiced their objection to xenophobia and called on the Greek state to protect them. Similar rallies were staged in Rethymno, Zakynthos and Tripoli. In Thessaloniki, the demonstrators mounted a sit-in protest before the statue of Venizelos (leading 20th century Greek political figure). "No to racism, equality and democracy for all," being the dominating slogan, the demonstrators asked for a peaceful co-existence respecting diversification.

Doctors performed a brain scan and a tracheotomy on Israels Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who has been treated since January 4 in Jerusalems Hadassah hospital after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage. Spokesman for Jerusalems Hadassah hospital Ron Krumer said that after the multiple strokes Ariel Sharon suffered and the three operations he underwent, tracheotomy was successful. "The Israeli Premier remains in serious, but stable condition," he added. In the meantime, the Israeli cabinet decided to allow Palestinians living in eastern Jerusalem to take part in the Palestinian parliamentary elections scheduled for January 25, while Hamas group was not allowed. Earlier, during the meeting of the Israeli cabinet, the Attorney General had announced that Ehud Olmert will be acting Prime Minister up until the March 28 parliamentarian elections, since he decided not to declare Ariel Sharon permanently incapacitated.

OFI was outnumbered when Roubakis was shown off the pitch after receiving a second yellow card.
