[01] Investigations Continue Farewell

Late on Tuesday night, the first 23 identified bodies were transferred to Cyprus by a C-130 aircraft of the Greek Air Force. The post mortems of further 19 unidentified bodies are to be completed by noon. In the meantime, three of the 121 victims of the Helios airliner that crashed in Grammatiko last Sunday, will be buried on Wednesday. They are the bodies of the co-pilot Charalampos Charalampous, and the passengers Charalampos Prokopiou and Evgenia Kenta-Prokopiou. Furthermore, new evidence is surfaced by the Cypriot newspaper Fileleftheros. The condolences book for the victims of the air tragedy will be open until Thursday at the House of Cyprus, 10 Herakleitou Str at Kolonaki, Athens. Greek Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos signed at the condolences book on Wednesday, while Cyprus ambassador, US ambassador to Athens Charles Ries, the Iraqi and Japanese ambassadors as well as Lebanons charge daffairs expressed their condolences on Tuesday. Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos is expected in Athens in the evening to be briefed by the Greek Interior and Transport Ministries regarding the measures taken by the competent authorities.

[02] Amidst Incidents Evacuation Deadline Ended

This morning, Israeli soldiers invaded the Jewish settlement of Neve Dekalim, at the Gaza Strip, to remove the remaining settlers and their supporters, as the deadline for their leave ended at midnight. More than 10,000 soldiers and policemen are taking part in the evacuation operation of Neve Dekalim settlement, which is the largest at the Gaza Strip. Several settlers left voluntarily, but hundreds opposing to the evacuation remain in their houses, refusing to leave the Gaza Strip. In the meantime, Israeli forces are preparing to intervene in order to remove any settlers remaining at the Morag settlement, at the southern part of the Gaza Strip, underlined police spokesperson Hagai Dotan.

[03] 31 Dead - 40 Injured Bomb Attacks in Baghdad

A triple bomb attack with booby-trapped cars shook this morning the heart of Baghdad. According to the latest report coming from hospital sources, 31 people lost their lives and 40 sustained injuries. The Iraqi Internal Affairs Ministry had originally spoken of 25 dead and 35 injured. "31 dead and 40 injured have been admitted to the Al Kidi hospital. 29 males are included in the dead, one woman and one child," reportedly said a hospital source. The three-booby trapped cars exploded within a period of 30 minutes at the heart of the Iraqi capital, two of them at a bus station. Of the 40 injured, 30 are males and 10 females.

[04] 20 Injured Bloody Assaults

At least 20 people sustained injuries during consecutive attacks reported today around Bangladesh. The bombs exploded in central streets near government buildings from 08:00 to 08:30 (Greek time). A bomb exploded outside the Sheraton hotel in Daka. "There have been reports on explosions in various parts of the country and security forces are heading to these areas. The causes still remain unknown," said a police spokesperson in Daka. A Police official in Tsitagong underlined the explosions were caused by homemade explosive devices.

[05] Mouroutsos Claimed the Bronze

Greek Tae Kwon Do Gold Olympian Michalis Mouroutsos paved the way for other Greek medals to follow in the 23rd Universiade in Smyrne, after claiming the bronze medal last night. The Sydney triumphant was defeated in the 67Kg semifinal by South-Korean Mum Kyu Lee and was thus proclaimed bronze medallist.

Positive Test in view of European Championship

With his performance competing in a new category (67Kg), for which he had to put on weight, the Greek champion was more than promising for a distinction in the upcoming European Championship. "These games were a very good test for this new category in which I am competing. I proved I am good and truly believe I will do much better in the future. The Universiade is a perfect opportunity before the European championship in October. I hope the new administration of the Greek federation will properly assess my work and include me in the team, so that I can compete in the European championship," ended Michalis Mouroutsos.

[06] Babaginda Dressed in Red

Nigerian football player Babaginda is dressed in red as of Tuesday. The former striker of the Ukrainian team Metalurg Donetsk did not have do a lot of thinking and accepted Olympiacos three-contract. On Tuesday evening the African ace signed and faxed his new contract that will earn him two million euros. Babaginda is expected in Athens to go through the necessary medial tests.
