    Declaring open the 14th assembly of the presidents of national Olympic committees, the President of the Republic, Costis Stephanopoulos today called for Olympic monuments and ideals to be kept alive.

    Later, IOC President Jacques Rogge addressed the meeting, saying he wanted to assure the entire world that Athens will organize the best Olympic Games ever. His comments were echoed by Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos, who said that the Greek capital was already prepared for the big event.

    Presenting New Democracy program to improve citizens daily lives in Piraeus today, the partys leader, Costas Karamanlis, accused the government of divisive policies and arrogant behaviour. He also slammed Pasok leader George Papandreou, charging that he had only now been briefed on the problems facing the Greek people.

    This week, Pasok and ND will hold party rallies in Thessaloniki. Tomorrow, Pasok leader George Papandreou is scheduled to address the socialist partys supporters, while on Sunday, ND leader Costas Karamanlis will gather the conservative partys followers.

    Meanwhile, Papandreou spoke to a rally of about 7,000 women in the Athens suburb of Galatsi this evening, where he announced measures for dealing with unemployment for women and incentives for businesses that will create cr&#232;ches for working mothers.

    A cloudy and mild day is forecast, with local storms in the northern Ionian, Epirus and western Greece. Temperatures in Athens will range from 9 to 19 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 5 to 11 degrees.
