    Showers and storms are forecast in all parts of the country that will ease off from the west later in the day. Temperatures in Athens will range from 14-23 C; and in Thessaloniki from 10-15 C.

    [02] EU Summit kicks off, PM Simitis speaks to jourmalists

    The European Constitution, the economy and competitiveness and the issue of illegal migrancy are dominating the two-day EU executive Summit taking place in Brussels today and tomorrow.

    During a press conference today, Prime Minister Costas Simitis stated he spoke about Greece's positions concerning the European Constitution and spoke in favor Romano Prodi's proposals concerning the Commission's composition.

    Mr. Simitis also ruled out the possibility of Greece's participation in the multinational force in Iraq after France, Germany's and Russia acceptance.

    [03] PM's contacts on EU summit's sidelines

    On the sidelines of the EU Summit in Brussels, PM Costas Simitis had a brief discussion with his British counterpart, Tony Blair with whom he discussed the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.

    ND spokesperson, Theodoris Rousopoulos characterized the PM's statements as a utilization of a national issue for small party, pre-electoral interests.

    PM Simitis also met with his Turkish counterpart, Tayip Erdogan and the President of the Cypriot Republic, Tasos Papadopoulos, who clarified his country does not intend to exercise its veto with respect to Turkey's European accession.

    [04] ND leader adresses Euroepan People's Party conference in Brussels

    The leaders of the European People's Party also had contacts in Brussels. During his address at the party's conference, the leader of the ND party, Konstantinos Karamanlis requested the equal participation of all member states in the EU's decision-making centers.

    [05] 25% of insured at IKA are economic migrants

    One out of four insured individuals with the Social Insurance Foundation (IKA) is an economic migrant according to recently submitted information. According to today's 'TA NEA' newspaper, out of 1,900,000 insured individuals, 505,000 are economic migrants primarily Albanians, followed by workers from Balkan states, Russia, Pakistan, Egypt and Poland.

    It is estimated that the country's work force is presently 10% foreign while by the year 2015, one out four residents in Greece is estimated to be a foreigner.

    [06] Palestinians arrest three over US convoy bombing

    Palestinian police today arrested three suspected militants and hunted for two more over a bomb attack on a U.S. diplomatic convoy that killed three security guards in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian security sources said the three men detained belonged to the Popular Resistance Committees, an umbrella group of militants that carried out previous roadside bombings against Israeli forces. The group denied any role in the convoy attack

    [07] UN Council adopts Iraq resolution unanimously

    The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously today to adopt a resolution on post-war Iraq, a victory for the United States that sought approval for its occupation of the country. Until hours before the vote, the support of key council members, Russia, Germany and France was in doubt. All had opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

    U.S. President George W. Bush, under pressure over the growing cost of the Iraqi occupation in U.S. lives and money, was hoping the resolution would encourage nations to support the occupation with troops and cash. It also asks Iraqi leaders to draw up a plan by Dec. 15 for a new constitution and elections. But Russia, Germany and France made clear no further aid or military contributions would be forthcoming.

    [08] N.Korea says ready to display "nuclear deterrent"

    North Korea said today it would display a "nuclear deterrent" at an appropriate time to end debate over its nuclear status if the United States delayed a solution to an impasse over Pyongyang's atomic ambitions.

    A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman also criticised calls for a fresh round of six-way nuclear talks, saying such discussions were meaningless unless Washington dropped its hostility toward Pyongyang.
