    A mainly fine day is forecast, with slight north winds and some cloudy patches later in the north.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 25 to 35 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 22 to 34 degrees.

    [02] Greece sends condolences for bombing of UN office in Baghdad

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis today sent a telegram to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, expressing the Greek government's condolences for the victims of yesterday's bomb attack on the UN offices in Baghdad, in which 20 people were killed and over 100 injured. Earlier, Foreign Minister George Papandreou issued a statement condemning the bombing and saying it constituted a blow to the UN's role in the reconstruction of Iraq.

    [03] Relief measures announced for Lefkada quake victims

    A package of measures for the relief of those left homeless by last week's earthquake in Lefkada was announced today by Interior minister Costas Skandalidis, who is presently visiting the Ionian island. The measures include financial assistance of 30 million euros for immediate repairs to buildings, ports and roads.

    The Development Ministry expressed concern today about inflationary pressures, caused by the soaring prices of fuel, due to increased tensions in the Middle East.

    [05] Novermber 17th terrorist trial resumes after summer break

    The trial of 19 suspected members of the November 17th urban guerrilla group resumed today after an 11-day summer break, with more testimonies by the defendants. On the stand, 60-year-old Theologos Psaradellis denied that he was a member of the terrorist organisation and charged that he was being persecuted for his anti-dictatorship activities in the late 1960s and early 70s.

    [06] World Sailing Championships begin today

    Another Olympic test event ' this time, the World Sailing Championships ' started this morning, attended by Culture minister Evangelos Venizelos and the President of the Athens 2004 organising committee, Yanna Angelopoulou. Commenting on a controversial interview in the British "Guardian" newspaper with the Athens 2004 security adviser, Peter Ryan, Angelopoulou pointed out that Greece was the only country to invest so much money in security for the Games.

    [07] Israel to retaliate for Jerusalem bomb attack

    Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon decided today on a series of military strikes against Palestinian militants, in response to yesterday's suicide bombing that killed 18 people in Jerusalem. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mahmoud Abbas, ordered security services to arrest the militants behind the attack.

    [08] Iran condemns Baghdad bombing of UN offices

    Iranian President Mohammad Khatami today condemned the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad as an "evil act" that would only give US occupying forces an excuse to stay longer in Iraq.
