    The day will start sunny in all parts of the country, with cloud building up in the centre and northern mainland from early evening, which may lead to isolated showers or storms. The temperature in Athens will range from 24 to 35C, in the islands from 23C to 33 and in Thessaloniki from 22 to 34C.

    [02] Pasok executive bureau discusses electoral law changes

    The government's proposed changes to the electoral law are the focus of today's meeting of the ruling Pasok party's executive bureau. This morning, Prime Minister Costas Simitis discussed the controversial issue with the party secretary, Michalis Chrysohoidis, and Interior minister Costas Skandalidis, who briefed him on the contacts he had with opposition parties.

    [03] Papandreou offers support to Chrysohoidis

    Foreign minister George Papandreou met this morning with the new secretary of the Pasok Central Committee, Michalis Chrysohoidis. Following the meeting, Papandreou said Chrysohoidis had undertaken a major challenge in his endeavours to ensure an open and democratic party, and offered his undivided support.

    [04] Constantopoulos appeals for non-closure of Athens UN office

    At a meeting with Foreign minister George Papandreou today, Coalition of the Left leader Nikos Constantopoulos appealed to the Greek government to oppose a plan by the United Nations to close its office housing its delegation in Athens. Constantopoulos stressed that the UN delegation in Athens, which also covers the regions of Cyprus and Israel, had carried out extremely important work.

    [05] "Dress rehearsal" for the 2004 Olympic Games

    Culture minister Evangelos Venizelos today described as a final dress rehearsal for the Games the organisation of test events from August 6 to 28. Venizelos also underlined that there will be no traffic restrictions in the city centre during the period of the Olympics in Athens. Entry to all areas will be unrestricted, but motorists should apply for a special entry card from the sports federations.

    [06] November 17th trial continues without Savvas Xiros

    The November 17th terrorist trial is continuing without defendant Savvas Xiros, who walked out yesterday, after the court rejected his motion for his pre-trial confession to be disregarded. Earlier today, it was decided that he would not be forced to attend.

    His brother and fellow defendant, Christodoulos Xiros has also called for the withdrawal of his pre-trial confession, claiming that he was under severe psychological duress and threatened by the presence of armed men from the anti-terrorist squad. The court's ruling on the motion is expected tomorrow.

    [07] Fuel runs out as tanker truck owners strike

    Motorists are advised to fill up their tanks with petrol, as the market is in danger of remaining without fuel, due to an indefinite strike called this morning by the owners of tanker trucks. They are demanding that fuel companies respect the agreement made for an increase in transport fees.

    [08] Restrictions lifted on city traffic for August

    As from today, all vehicles irrespective of odd or even licence numbers, will be able to circulate in the city centre. Traffic restrictions will come into force again on August 26.

    [09] US warns of possible airline suicide attacks by al Qaeda

    The US Department of Homeland Security has warned the airline industry of possible suicide hijackings and bombings by Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network for the rest of this summer. The officials said the warnings came from "multiple sources," including captured al Qaeda operatives.
