The temperature in Athens will range from 21 to 32C, at the islands from 23 to 30C and in Thessaloniki from 21 to 29C.(19/6/2003 12:10:00 ��) [02] EU Summit Meeting commences in Chalkidiki this afternoonUnder tight security measures the historic European Union Summit Meeting begins in Chalkidiki this afternoon.After his arrival in Thessaloniki, Prime Minister Costas Simitis stated that emphasis would be given to the new European constitution and the combating of illegal migration. Referring to the Summit Meeting, Press Deputy Minister Tilemachos Chytiris told our radio station that Europe is moving ahead with compromises, adding that the more Europe becomes unified the more each European citizen will feel that he belongs in the same political entity. He also said that veto should be abolished in the 25 EU member states and should be exercised only in basic issues such as the issue of security. At the same time, in view of the European Popular Party meeting, the New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis expressed reservations over the proposals of the Constituent Assembly. The main opposition party is against the position of the Council's President and proposes the boosting of its role. Meanwhile, as European leaders are arriving in Chalkidiki, thousands of demonstrators, who are objecting to globalization, are gathering in Thessaloniki. A big anti racist march will take place today, while numerous people will demonstrate tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Finally, in an interview with our station, the Press spokesman of the Greek police said that Thessaloniki had been turned into a fortress, adding that for the first time an operation of multi branch character would take place in Greece. (19/6/2003 12:11:00 ��) [03] Evia continues to be rockedAnother earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale took place at Psahna, Evia at 06:38 today causing alarm to the inhabitants of the area.More damages were reported today, in addition to the ones caused yesterday. In an interview with our station, the Research Director of the Geodynamic Institute Gerasimos Papadopoulos said that on the basis of the data and means that are available, it is difficult to evaluate the situation in Psahna. Additionally, seismologist Maria Sahpazi told NET 105.8 that the earthquakes at Psahna constitute a developing seismic activity and is not sure whether we are in the main phase or in a post seismic one. (19/6/2003 12:12:00 ��) [04] Manikas – Neonakis resignations accepted by SimitisFollowing the Manikas – Neonakis resignations, which Prime Minister Costas Simitis accepted, the Prime Minister looks determined to take important decisions after the end of the Greek EU Presidency.The two men's resignations took place one day after Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis tabled at Parliament the results of an investigation on the two men's transactions with the ASE, carried out by the President of the Capital Market. Meanwhile, in an interview with NET 105.8, Mr Michalis Neonakis said that he was justified by the results of the investigation, adding that the amount of 64 million euros is irrelevant to the invested capital and constitutes a book sum of all the transactions in three years time. From his side, Mr Stephanos Manikas explained that an attempt to attack the government and the Prime Minister was made in his face, adding that transparency would prevail and the legality of his transactions would be proven. On a relative development, Press Deputy Minister Tilemachos Chytiris told our radio station that nothing reprehensible had been proven against Messrs Neonakis and Manikas, while Mr Costas Laliotis stated that faith in transparency, legality and democratic morals is non negotiable and is valid everywhere and every time for everyone and everything. Culture Minister Evagelos Venizelos said that the two men's resignations prove their sense of responsibility, while from its side, the New Democracy party announced that the their resignations are not enough to restore the credibility of the ASE, demanding the immediate convening of the Parliamentary Committee of institutions and transparency. (19/6/2003 12:13:00 ��) [05] Delphi museum to re operateOn the occasion of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, the Central Archaeological Committee decided the Delphi museum to re operate.The museum will host the 'Athenians' Treasure', a monument that today is dismantled.
