    A mainly fine day is forecast with some cloudy patches developing later in the day and possibility of local storms on high ground in Epirus and Macedonia. Winds notherly very strong in the Aegean. Temperatures in Athens will range between 23 C to 33 C and in Thessaloniki between 21 C to 32 C.

    [02] Turkey s respect of international law- key to EU admission

    From the Hague, first stop of his last tour of E.U member states in his capacity as President of the European Council, Prime-minister Simitis sent a clear message to Turkey, calling it to abide by the international rules if it wanted to become a member of the EU, underlining that no country could act selectively.

    Commenting on the recent tension in the Aegean, following Monday s incident where 2 Turkish F-16 jet fighters flew close to an Olympic Airways passenger plane over the island of Psara, Simitis stressed that the military exercises Turkey was conducting did not respect international laws governing air and sea borders.

    Turkey s General Chief of Staff denied any violations of Greek air space, on the contrary accused Greece of violating international law.

    After being briefed by Foreign Minister, George Papandreou, EU Commissioner for enlargement Gynter Ferhoigen called on Ancara to take the initiatives to build up good neighborly relations with Greece He also underlined that neither Greece nor the EU were responsible for the recent tension

    Foreign Minister, Papandreou said that Turkey s good neighborly relations with EU member states was among the major factors for a positive assessment related to the country s admission to the EU , adding that once a month he would brief the European Commission on developments in Greek-Turkish relations.

    Greek government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas dennounced the provocative stand of the Turkish military establishment and called on Turkey s political leadership to take on its responsibilities if they supported the European prospect of their country.

    [03] Demonstrations against the creation of waste processing sites

    Residents of west and northeast Attica have organised demonstrations in protest against the government s decision to create waste management and processing sites in their area. Today, that the relative bill will be voted on in parliament a protest rally has been organised outside the Parliament House in Athens.

    [04] Stratoniki mine agreement

    A meeting between, Finance undersecretary, Hristos Pahtas and representatives of prospective buyers for TVX Hellas mine company in Stratoniki will take place today. It is expected that a final agreement on the new structure to take over the mine s operation will be reached.

    In the meantime, some 120 miners continue for the 10th day an underground hunger strike, protesting against the imminent closure of the facility.

    [05] Dual citizenship to Albanians of Greek descent

    Government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said that the government is holding negotiations with the Albanian government related to an agreement providing for dual citizenship to ethnic Greek Albanians living for several years in Greece.

    Interior Minister, Kostas Scandalidis is holding talks on this delicate issue with his Albanian counterpart The measures sought by the Greek government is to grant Greek citizenship to Albanian nationals of Greek descent without loosing their Albanian nationality so Greek villages in northern Epirus are not abandoned.

    In an interview with NET state radio channel, Interior undersecretary, Lambros Papadimas said that this regulation demanded an interstate Greek-Albanian agreement ratified by the parliaments of both countries.

    Copmmenting the ND party said that this was a serious issue which should be carefully examined, stressing, however, that any change in the electoral body at the eve of parliamentary elections was inconceivable.
