[02] Debate over economy at Parliament

The government and the New Democracy party are going to participate in a debate at Parliament on the course of the economy and business interests.

The Prime Minister Costas Simitis is expected to defend the government positions on the ELPE – Petrola merger, while Mr Karamanlis is expected to refer to the Athens Stock Exchange issue on the occasion of the proposal made by his party regarding the setting up of an examining committee.

Meanwhile, the government spokesman Christos Protopapas described the New Democracy party's proposal for the creation of an examining committee for the Stock Exchange issue indescribable and unprecedented acrobatics that are creating problems to the positive climate existing in the economy.

In reply, New Democracy party spokesman said that Mr Simitis' government had proven that it did not wish the Parliament to examine in depth this big scanda.

Finally, referring to New Democracy party Honorary President Costas Mitsotakis' statements regarding the collapse of the Greek economy, Deputy Finance Minister Apostolos Fotiades said that New Democracy party's gloomy forecasts regarding the economy proved wrong. Greece is now a strong country, while during the main opposition party's days it was not.
