    A mainly fine day is forecast with possibility of showers and storms in the northwestern parts of the country. Winds west, northwesterly light to moderate. Temperatures in Athens will range between 16 C to 29 C and in Thessaloniki between 14C and 27 C.

    [02] Special measures to assist recently laid off

    Following the recent bankrupcy of two high profile Greek businesses, Labor Minister, Dimitris Reppas announced yesterday that the government will work out special programs to assist those laid off.

    Employees of the Palco company have been called to get their compensations after talks between representatives of employers and employees with the Labor Minister failed The company is relocating to a country with lower production costs.

    However, there is still hope for employees of the Yvonne chain of cosmetic retailers which might be taken over by another firm.

    On its part the government has disingaged recent bankrupcies from the general course of the economy. Speaking to the Pasok party Executive Office, Prime-minister Simitis said that apart from the closing down of companies there is the other version the creation of new jobs with the setting up of new companies.

    Finance Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis blamed the management of the companies which closed down, for not taking prompt advantage of the development incentives and the community funds.

    The President of the General Confederation of Greek Labor, Hristos Polyzogopoulos has dennounced that the recent wave of bankrupcy files follows an employers plan aimed to abolish labor rights.

    [03] Green light on mini-nuke weapons research

    The U.S Senate decision to back the scrapping of a 10 year old ban on researching mini-nuke weapons- nuclear weapons with about one-third the force of the bomb dropped on Hirosima in World War Two- is going to give rise to strong reactions. Democrats condemned the measure for fear of a new arms race.

    [04] U.S raises terror alert

    The U.S government raised its terror alert status from yellow to orange &#8211; the second highest level because of the recent terrorist bombings in Saudi Arabia and Morocco also in conjuction with intelligence reports concerning anti-US terrorist groups intentions.
