Temperatures in Athens will range between 18 C to 33 C and in Thessaloniki between 14C and 30 C.(14/5/2003 12:16:00 ��) [02] SARS suspect victim in GreeceGreece reported its first suspected case of SARS yesterday saying the possible victim was a 23 year old female South African flight attendant who worked for Southeast Asian routes for Dubai Airlines and flew to Athens on May 10 from Hong-Kong – one of the countries worst hit by the SARS.Preliminary tests were negative yesterday , results from special tests are expected today while definite conclusions will be drawn after an incubation period of 2 weeks said Eleni Giamarelou a doctor at the Athens Sismanoglio hospital where the suspect victim is being treated. Health Minister, Kostas Stefanis said that it has been referred as a suspect case to the WHO , stressing that it was not a confirmed case. The Transport Ministry ordered staff at the country s main airports to wear sterilised gloves and masks to avoid contact with passengers from SARS infected countries. Responding to news of a suspected SARS case, Greek doctors said they were considering calling off a planned 24 hour strike today to protest at what they called inadequate government measures to deal with potential SARS cases. Government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said there was no reason for panic while the President of the Athens Olympic Committee , Gianna Aggelopoulou stressed that all preventive measures have been taken. The International Olympic Committee is concerned about trips of its members coming from Asian countries. The issue will be discussed at the Committee s meeting in Madrid on Friday. Greek Health Minister, Kostas Stefanis, current President of the EU Health Ministers urged for the foundation of a European Center for Observation and Control of diseases and the promotion of a joint EU health policy. (14/5/2003 12:17:00 ��) [03] Greek Prime-minister visits Portugal, MaltaIn his capacity as EU President, Greek Prime-minister, Kostas Simitis visited Portugal yesterday and Malta today within the framework of his tour of European capitals , in view of the upcoming summit meeting to be held in Thessaloniki on June 20 and 21.From Portugal, Prime minister Simitis repeated that parliamentary elections will be held at the end of the government s 4-year term and stressed a government reshuffle is announced when decided. Earlier, government spokesman, Hristos Protopappas had said that any decisions related to changes in the electoral system will be taken after the Prime-minister s meeting with Interior Minister, Kostas Skandalidis. (14/5/2003 12:19:00 ��) [04] Greek satellite launched into spaceGreek telecommunications satellite- Hellas Sat - was launched at 1. 10 today from Cape Canveral Air Force Station in Florida. The Greek satelite will be in orbit at the mid of May and will cover the larger part of Europe, ME , Africa, Australia and many regions in Asia.The satellite is to provide a number of communications services, including the broadcast of the 2004 Summer Olympics from Athens to much of the Mediterranean.(14/5/2003 12:19:00 ��) [05] Revision of EU joint Agriculture policyDuring the informal EU Agriculture Ministers Council in Corfu, EU Commissioner on agriculture , Frans Fishler said that revision of the EU joint agriculture policy would be achieved during the Greek EU Presidency.Talks focused on genetically modified products at a time when the US has warned to file a World Trade Organisation complaint in hopes of getting the EU to lift its ban on new genetically modified products. In the meantime, the ND party has accused the government for not including the problems of Greek farmers in the priorities of the EU Agriculture Ministers meeting.
