[03] Seven die after Columbia explodes

Space shuttle Columbia exploded yesterday 16 minutes before landing at Kennedy centre. All seven crewmembers lost their lives, including the first Israeli cosmonaut. Their remains were located in a field in Texas.

Meanwhile, the authorities called on civilians not touch the wreckage of the spacecraft, some of which may be highly toxic. Already, 30 people have been hospitalised because they came into contact with some of the spacecraft's pieces.

Texas and Louisiana have been declared in a state of emergency so as the wreckage of the spacecraft are selected, while meteorologists have reported that a 160-metre long cloud with ash and metal fragments covered the two states.

It should be noted that one hour before landing, the cosmonauts had detected a problem with hydraulic system of the left wing. All space missions have been cancelled until the causes of the catastrophe are discovered.

[04] The Iraqi regime will be the first target “Observer” says

The Greek EU Presidency will decide on the European Union's further stance after the American Secretary of State Colin Powell presents the proof to the Security Council regarding the possession of weapons of mass destruction by Iraq. One of the initiatives that the Greek EU Presidency might take could be a European Summit meeting.

In the meantime, the head of the United Nations inspector Hans Blix and Mr Mohamed El Baradei of the International Committee of Atomic Energy will visit Bagdad on February 8 to meet with Iraqi scientists so as to be briefed on the Iraqi armaments programme.

On a relative development, the Anglican archbishop of Canterbury described a war against Iraq unacceptable and stated that he was pressing the British Prime Minister to prevent the crisis.

Meanwhile, according to the British newspaper Observer, the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and his officials' homes will be the first targets in the war against Iraq. In this way the Iraqi people will be convinced that the war is not against it but against the Iraqi regime, an official stated to the newspaper.
