    Cloud and rain is forecast in most parts of the country on Saturday, while storms are expected in the west later in the day and snow in Northern Greece.Winds easterly, northeasterly light to moderate in the north and southerly southeasterly very strong to gale force in the rest of the country. Cloud in Athens with rain later in the day and with temperatures between 13C and 17C. Same in Thessaloniki with temperatures from 9C to 13C.

    [02] Greece presents its EU Presidency priorities

    The completion of the European Union enlargement, the continuation of the discussion on the Lisbon agenda regulating social issues, immigration and illegal immigration, the convention on the future of Europe, the Iraq issue and the promotion of dialogue on issues of defense and foreign policy, are the five priorities of the Greek EU Presidency. The priorities were presented by Prime Minister Kostas Simitis in the joint press conference with European Commission President Romano Prodi at the Zappion Megaron Building in Athens yesterday.

    From his side, Mr Prodi stated that the European Commission will meet with the Greek Presidency during the signing ceremony for the accession of the 10 new European Union members in Athens on April 16. He also pointed out that the future of the Balkans belongs to the Community.

    Regarding the crisis in the Persian Gulf, Mr Simitis reiterated the need for European Union member - states to adopt a joint stance, underlining that the target of the European Union is peace.

    Referring to the Iraq issue, Mr Prodi stated that the Greek Presidency offers the opportunity for a more cohesive foreign policy to be manifested.

    Meanwhile, New Democracy party leader Kostas Karamanlis stated on the occasion of the Greek EU Presidency that his party would be present in this national effort and its goal would be to help the country.

    In statements he made yesterday after the meeting he had with his party's Euro-deputies, he underlined the need to exploit to the fullest the opportunity given to Greece to prove that even the smaller states can manifest constructive initiatives.

    [03] Soto to begin new round of deliberations on Cyprus issue

    United Nations special envoy Alvaro De Soto is beginning a new round of deliberations for the Cyprus issue. From Ankara, Mr Soto underlined that the Cyprus issue should be solved by the end of February, having as aim the accession of Cyprus to the European Union on April 16. Mr Soto will then visit Athens and Nicosia.

    Meanwhile, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry diplomats, the news regarding the changing of Ankara's policy has been attributed to misinterpretation.
