Gen. peace plan for Cyprus is the starting point for negotiations. Mr. Simitis said that U.N Kofi Annan proposals should be examined under the prism of Cyprus accession to the E.U, a development which would bridge differences, limit the Turkish-Cypriot community s dependance on Turkey and strengthen the common interests of the two communities.Mr. Simitis disagreed with those who object to negotiations at this point , stressing that the Turks have colonised the island and there was nothing to guarantee that they would continue their efforts to change the demography of the island. The Cyprus issue will be the subject of talks during the meetings of the Pasok party Central Committee on Thursday and Friday. The Anatoli news agency and CNN Turk said that Turkish –Cypriot representative, Raulf Dektash is expected to give a positive answer to the U.N peace plan. In the meantime, Greece's diplomatic marathon continues with Foreign Minister, George Papandreou holding talks in London yesterday and Washingthon today and tomorrow. Mr. Papandreou will meet with the American Secretary of State, Collin Powell and national security advisor, Kondoleeca Rize. Turkish Foreign Minister today will meet in Berlin with the UN special envoy on Cyprus Alvaro de Sotto (26/11/2002 12:21:00 ��) [03] KYSEA decided purchase of absolutely necessary arms equipmentThe Goverment Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence which convened yesterday ratified an arms equipment program of a total cost of 2.1 billion euro covering the purchase of 42 troop transport helicopters, 12- Apache- attack helicopters, the modernisation of 6 fregates assigned to the Skaramaga shipyiards and the construction of a new corvette to be built by the Elefsina shipyiards.Commenting on the decisions of the KYSEA, the N.D party said that the goverment proved it was hostage of vested interests and blamed the Defence Minister, Yiannos Papantoniou of misusing tax- payers money. The Coalition of the Left and Progress party objected to the promotion of such armament programs while the Greek Communist party said that new armament programs were included in the context of NATO nad euro-army plannings and served the wants and orders of big companies and mid men. In repply Prime-minister Simitis said that the goverment decided on the purchase of weapons that were absolutely necessary for the defence of the Aegean while goverment spokesman assured that negotiations were directly held with the weapon industries ruling out any payment of commissions. (26/11/2002 12:23:00 ��) [05] Pasok party inter-party elections put off for MayThe Pasok party Executive Office decided to hold interparty elections for regional organs in May instead of January.Pasok party general secretary, Kostas Laliotis said that municipal and prefectural elections indicated the multiple dynamic of cooperation with the left underlining, however, it was self-evident that the ruling party would try to win a strong majority in the 2004 parliamentary elections.
