    Sunshine is forecast in all parts of the country, with scattered cloud on the mainland and in the Ionian from late afternoon. Parts of the mainland will be misty in the morning. Winds northerly, light to moderate. In the north, temperatures will range from 11C to 28C; on the rest of the mainland from 14C to 30C; and in the Aegean islands from 18C to 29C. Temperatures in Athens between 17C and 30C; and in Thessaloniki from 14C to 27C.

    [02] Arafat&#8217;s compound besieged

    The Israeli army has laid siege to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compound in the West Bank town of Ramallah, hours after a suicide bomb in Tel Aviv killed five people and wounded over 60.

    A Palestinian policeman who was inside the Ramallah hedquarters was killed by a sniper, while during the night two Palestinians were killed when Israeli armored vehicles and helicopters attacked the Gaza outskirts.

    During the night, about 20 Palestinians wanted by the Israelis left the compound and gave themselves up.

    However the Israeli army is still demanding the surrender of key figures it believes are inside.

    Shocked by the new violent outbreaks in the Middle East, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan reiterated his appeal for the end of violence.

    [03] Media criticized over the way they handled the issue of terrorism

    Public Order Minister Michalis Chrysohoides is briefing today Prime Minister Costas Simitis on the issue of terrorism.

    Meanwhile, imprisoned "N 17" member Sawas Xiros took back what he said about his doctors&#8217; stance at Evagelismos hospital where he had been hospitalized. He also stated that no psychological pressure was exerted on him, adding that he would like to talk with the doctors that treated him so as to assure them that what he did not concern them.

    Xiros is to undergo another operation at Evagelismos hospital on Monday.

    Finally, the Athens Lawyers Association and the Network for Social and Political Rights are criticizing the Media for their stance on the issue of terrorism.

    Additionally, Synaspismos party leader Nikos Konstantopoulos expressed his party&#8217;s protest for the handling of the issue of terrorism by the Media.

    [04] Greek economy to be affected slightly by war against Iraq

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis pointed to the Cabinet yesterday that the repercussions to the Greek economy from world negative climate that is deteriorating due to the eventual strike against Iraq will be of minor importance. During the meeting, Mr Simitis approved a series of measures so as to control price increases and to deescalate inflation.

    Among others, regular checks will be taking place in the market, while invoices will be issued for agricultural products by producers.

    Moreover, 1,500 petrol stations will be supplied with a list of suggested prices.

    The Prime Minister maintained that the economy is protected by her participation in the EMU and high growth rates. He also described as inaccurate New Democracy party&#8217;s allegations according to which the Public Utilities rates are responsible for the increase of inflation.

    He explained that only 1.1% of the factors influencing inflation derive from Public Utility services.

    Meanwhile, the New Democracy party called on the government to suspend rate increases at Public Utilies and tax regulations that burden the cost of enterprises, while the Synaspismos party referred to the lack of substantial checks and measures for those breaking the law.

    [05] Gennimata ahead of Tzanetakos for the next Municipal elections

    According to opinion poll results issued by OPINION, PASOK candidate for the supra-prefecture Fofi Gennimata is ahead of New Democracy candidate Giannis Tzanetakos 23 days before the municipal elections. However, the surprise lies in the fact that Mr Tzanetakos comes third with 13.7%s, while second comes LAOS President Giorgos Karatzaferis with 14,4% and. Mrs Gennimata is first with 39.4%.

    At the same time, in an opinion poll carried out in the Athens Municipality, Mrs Fofi Gennimata comes first with 33.3%, Mr Tzanetakos second with 17.5% and Mr Karatzaferis third with 8.4%
