[02] Simitis inaugurates Thessaloniki Trade Fair

During his inauguration speech at the Thessaloniki Trade Fair yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis focused on the country’s economy and the uprooting of terrorism. He stated that within an internationally insecure environment, the government’s target has become the civilians’ safety.

At the same time, he described the attempt in dealing with terrorism as a top challenge for the country, describing terrorists as stowaways of leftist ideology without any ideological extenuation for their crimes.

Meanwhile, following Dimitris Koufodinas’ refusal to cooperate with the authorities, Sawas, Christodoulos and Vassilis Xiros appear to be changing their stance. They intend to retract their confessions.

Their lawyer, Giorgos Agiostratitis stated that his clients align themselves with Dimitris Koufodinas, without denying their deeds and added that a series of surprises would follow.

Commenting on their stance through his lawyer Ioanna Kourtovik, Dimitris Koufodinas, who will testify before the special magistrate Leonidas Zervobeakos, stated that they “had got the message”.

From his side, Press Deputy Minister Tilemachos Chytiris stated that the procedural development of the case would not be affected by a change in the defence tactics.

Referring to the economy, Mr Simitis stressed that the increase of the standard of living was accomplished gradually with the increase of productivity and not with arbitrary benefits, underlining that the growth rate is the highest in Europe. He also referred to the rise of employment, describing the new tax system as a key system for competition. He also underlined that Greece is covering the distance separating it with other European Union countries on many basic financial indices in a fast pace.

Regarding foreign policy, Mr Simitis referred to the political fluidity in Turkey, warning for possible tension and added that Greece wishes to boost Greek-Turkish relations. He also described Cyprus’ accession to the European Union as a top priority.

Commenting the Prime Minister’s speech the New Democracy party stated that Mr Simitis continues to ignore the civilians’ daily and serious problems.

The Greek Communist party stated that Mr Simitis spoke as an irresponsible observer of developments, preparing new measures against employees.

The Synaspismos party spoke of lack of a vision and perspective in the country’s economic and social course.

During the Prime Minister’ s speech, minor incidents took place between the police and a group of farmers and PAOK football team fans outside the Velidion conference centre.
