  • [01] Weather forecast

    Changeable weather is forecast in all parts of the country, with sunny spells and scattered cloud alternating with showers and brief storms, especially on the mainland. Winds north-northeasterly, light to strong, turning very strong in parts of the Aegean. In the north, temperatures will range from 17C to 28C; in the west from 19C to 32C; and in the rest of the country from 20C to 31C. Temperatures in Athens between 22C and 30C; and in Thessaloniki between 20C and 28C.

    [02] First civil suit against "N 17"

    Victim and first witness and of the terrorist organization "November 17" New Democracy MP Lefteris Papadimitriou is testifying to the special examiner today.

    Moreover, Alexandros Giotopoulos is expected to make an additional testimony before Special Examiner Leonidas Zervobeakos today.

    Meanwhile, the first civil suit against "N 17" suspects was submitted to Special Examiner Leonidas Zervobeakos yesterday morning, by Eleni Athanasiadis, widow of Alexandros Athanasiadis, who was murdered by N17 on Kifisias Avenue in 1988.

    At the same time, Mrs Athanasiadou is seeking financial compensation for the psychological distress she has undergone. The suit was submitted by Mrs. Athanasiadis'

    On a relative development, criminal charges against all parties involved were pressed by the Athens Court of First Instance DA, Sotiris Bagias, concerning "violation of service confidentiality", after new leaks in the "November 17" case briefs.

    It should be noted that similar charges had been pressed concerning the leaking of the suspects' preliminary examinations to the press two weeks ago.

    [03] Measures for protection from floods

    The political leadership of the Ministry of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works (YPEHODE) will propose today additional measures for protection from floods totaling 600,000 euros at a meeting at the Interior Ministry. According to YPEXODE Deputy Minister Giannis Tsaklides these measures concern the construction of a metal curtain along Kifisos river and the purchase of 10,000 additional sacks with soil that will be placed along the river for protection.

    Meanwhile, the Athens Court of First Instance DA, Sotiris Bagias has ordered a preliminary examination aiming to discover whether there were any deficiencies at the areas that flooded.

    On a relative development, Moschato residents will block Piraeus and Kifisos crossroads today protesting for the recent floods, stated to NET 105.8 Deputy Mayor in Moschato Grigoris Papadopoulos.

    [04] Simitis to hold series of meetings

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis will hold a meeting with Agriculture Minister Yiorgos Drys today to discuss development in the rural sector and then Mr Simitis will meet with the PASOK&#8217;s Secretary General Costas Laliotis.

    In the coming days, the Prime Minister will have a series of meetings with party cadres responsible for financial issues, in view of the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair.

    [05] Karamanlis discusses terrorism, floods etc

    During yesterday&#8217; meeting at the New Democracy party&#8217; headquarters, under the chairmanship of the party&#8217;s leader Costas Karamanlis, the participants examined the recent floods, the preparation of Mr Karamanlis&#8217; visit to the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair and the issue of terrorism.

    [06] Checks for price increases

    The Development Ministry has begun checks in the market following a wave of price increases. Within this framework, the ministry has decided that refreshments should carry indicative prices.

    At the same time, in an interview with NET 105.8, the Consumers President Manolis Tsifakis stated that the policy of free price increases is increasing the gap between income and the cost of life.

    [07] Europe in trouble

    In Germany, many areas have been declared in a state of emergency, after the Elbe overflowed all along the north, while the government is taking measures to deal with the disaster.

    At the same time, the water level of the Danube has caused serious problems to Budapest and Belgrade.

    In the Chech Republic, it has been estimated that the damages caused by the floods have reached 2 to 3 billion euros, while 14 people lost their lives and about 220,000 had to leave their houses.

    Finally, in Austria near Saltsburgh a bridge collapsed and strees and basements were flooded. In North-east Rumania hundreds of houses and thousands of acres suffered damages.
