[02] First eight "November 17" members imprisoned

Eight members of the terrorist organisation "November 17" have been imprisoned in specially constructed cells at Korydallos prison today. These are Christodoulos and Vassilis Xiros, Dionysis Georgiades, Vassilis Georgatos, Iraklis Kostaris, Costas Karatsolis, Theologos Psaradelis and Thomas Serifis. More members of the terrorist organization are expected to be imprisoned in the same prison.

Today, Patroklos Tselendis is expected to testify before the appeal magistrate, while Nikos Papanastasiou, who is considered as one of the oldest members of the organization will testify tomorrow.

The statue of limitations on murder cases 20 years later, is threatening two "November 17" executions that were committed in November 1983, which are expected to be written off in the same month of 2003.

These are the killing of US Navy Captain, George Tsantes and his driver Nikos Veloutsos. According to “Ta Nea” newspaper, in order for such a development to be avoided, a bill must be issued which will indict the offenders to trial and suspend the limitation for five more years.

It should be noted that the opportunity to prosecute three murder cases has been lost: CIA Athens Stations Chief Richard Wells (1975), retired police officer Evaggelos Mallios (1976), as well as the lieutenant commander of the Greek Police Special Forces Sotiris Stamoulis (1980), since 20 years have passed.

However, according to the terrorism law, forming and participating in a criminal organization is a continuous crime and is prosecuted as a felony.

In an interview with NET 105.8, Deputy Press Minister Tilemachos Chytyris stated that New Democracy’s statements regarding a connection between PASOK and terrorism had poisoned political life in the past, while now the same party maintains that the “brains” of the “November 17” will never be caught.

From his side, New Democracy party Parliamentary spokesman Prokopis Pavlopoulos stated that the issue of terrorism should not become the subject in the arean of opinion polls, adding that the policy of political parties should be judged as a whole.

Finally, the Synaspismos party leader Nikos Konstantopulos asked to briefed on the financing and criminal activities of “November 17”.

[03] Second packet of tax reforms announced

On the basis of the second packet of tax reform, the non-taxed limit for a first residence through inheritance or parental donation has risen to 65,000 euros for the unmarried, and 100,000 for married couples. More over the non taxed limit will rise additionally to 20,000 more euros for couples with two children and an additional 30,000 euros for couples with three children.

In tandem, Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis appeared optimistic on the course of the economy, stressing that the growth rate for the gross national product for 2003 is expected to range from 4 to 4.1%.

From its side, the New Democracy party spoke of an artificial confusion serving the government’s communications needs, while the Synaspismos party spoke of fragmentary measures.

Finally, circulation rates for cars and motorcycles are expected to rise by 10% in 2003.
