    - Sunny throughout the country today with a chance of scattered cloud later in the day in the Macedonia and Thrace. Northerly winds, moderate to strong on the Aegean. In Athens temperatures will range between 24C to 36C and in Thessaloniki between 22C to 34C.

    [02] Prime-minister Simitis vows to eradicate November 17 terrorist group

    Police continue investigations on the November 17 organization while the anti-terror squad have intensified efforts to locate the tenant of the group s second hide-out in Pagrati. He is considered among the masterminds of the organization .

    In the meantime, interrogation of Savvas Xiros continues while according to information he has admitted involvement in terrorist acts and revealed data on the case .

    Savvas Xiros , 40, suspected of planting the explosive device at the port of Pireus 13 days ago, was injured as the bomb detonated prematurely .

    In parallel with terrorist acts, the police are investigating cases of big robberies involving hundreds of million drs believed to be carried out by the November 17 group to finance its activities.

    The Scotland Yard deputy chief will today give a press conference at the residence of the German ambassador in Athens.

    Following a meeting of the inner cabinet yesterday, Prime-minister Simitis vowed to heal what he called Greece s 27 year old wound of terrorism and put all guerillas of the November 17 group behind bars .He stressed that investigations will continue carefully and with determination.

    Public Order Minister, Mihalis Hrisohoidis stated that police investigations will continue until the full eradication of the group and the phenomenon of terrorism in Greece.

    Greek government spokesman described November 17 terrorists as common criminals stressing that terrorism is a threat to society and democracy.

    Main opposition New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis called for the crushing of terrorism on both an ideological and an operational level adding that his party backed the police task in a major national issue.

    Kostas Bakoyiannis, son of November 17 victim, Pavlos Bakoyiannis described present circumstances as a unique opportunity to eradicate terrorism adding that all arrests of suspects should be made within the frame of law and a spirit of justice.

    [03] Forty-two people involved in night rings arrested

    Ten of the 42 people arrested on charges of murder attempts, blackmailing and bomb explosions have requested a 48 hour extension of deadline to make their statements.

    The inner cabinet meets today to discuss the development of rural areas while Prime-minister Simitis will later meet with competent Ministers to examine the issue of illegal immigration.

    [05] Compensation to flood victims

    Government officials yesterday completed the first stage of assesing the extensive damage caused to homes and businesses by massive floods in Athens following a heavy rainstorm earlier this week. The low-income inner city suburbs of Moshato and Renti were particularly hit by the flash flood.

    The prefectures of Athens and Pireus began today paying the 200 thousand drs compensation to those affected to cover their immediate needs. Necessary precondition to get the financial aid is the presentation of the damage assessing record.

    [06] Cyprus helicopter crash

    Preliminary reports from a prove into a helicopter crash yesterday in Cyprus indicates that a mechanical fault may have caused the accident , in which the commander of the island s military forces and the airforce chief were killed together with 3 officers. The helicopter was on a night time training exercise when it crash landed into a ravine and exploded.

    Two Greek experts have been requested to participate in investigations to determine the cause of the crash. The Cypriot government yesteday declared 3 days of mourning for the 5 victims.
