    [03] Weather forecast

    Sunshine is forecast in all parts of the country, with mist likely in the morning. Winds southwesterly, light to moderate. In the north, temperatures will range from 1C to 18C; on the rest of the mainland from 4C to 21C; and in the islands from 7C to 19C. Sunshine in Athens, with temperatures between 8C and 20C. Same in Thessaloniki with temperatures from 4C to 17C.

    [04] Status of permancy for 1,000 I.K.A doctors

    During an extraordinary meeting yesterday, Health Minister Alekos Papadopoulos, Labour Minister Dimitris Reppas and Finance Minister Nikos Constantopoulos decided that 1,000 temporary doctors of the Social Insurance Institute (I.K.A) enjoy from now on a permanency status. Their permanency has been the I.K.A doctors' demand, who are staging two new five-day strikes on 19 February and 4 March. In the meantime, Mr Papadopoulos anounced that emergency cases will be dealth with from now on at special sectors of Athens and Thessaloniki hospitals until the end of the year. Finally, the European Commission approved the European medical card last night following the intervention of Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou.

    [05] Government to discuss Media policy

    The government's policy on the Media will be discussed during a Cabinet meeting today. The Press Minister intends to present a draft bill banning any transactions with the Public Sector of top shareholders of the Media. From its side, the New Democracy party disagreed with the government's conception of top shareholders and refused to participate in the discussion commenced by the government. In the meantime, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis accused the Prime Minister Costas Simitis of belated interest, attributing the corruption of the public sector to intense party spirit and the existing situation in the public administration.

    [06] Inflation in January reaches 4%

    Inflation in January rose to 4% in comparison to December when it was 3%. This rise is attributed to the increase of prices of vegetables due to the bad weather conditions that prevailed. Government officials foresee a downward course of inflation in the coming months, beginning from February.

    [07] Press conference on the rise of prices

    Development Deputy Minister Christos Theodorou will give a press conference today on the rising of prices due to the euro. On Monday a meeting will be held between the business world and the Development ministry on the issue of an agreement made between bussinessmen and the government for not increasing prices of goods. This agreement expires at the end of February.

    [08] T.E.I professors to continue with their mobilisations

    Technological Institute (TEI) professors decided to go on with their mobilisations, while Education Minister Petros Efthymiou stated that the state would safeguard the normal operation of the institutes. He also accused the professors of creating moral, political and legal problems. Finally, professors will meet with Mr Efthymiou tomorrow.

    [09] I.A.S to submit letters of guarrantee today on O.A purchase

    I.A.S consortium is to submit its letters of guarrantee by this afternoon regarding the purchase price of 51% of Olympic Airways. Now, what remains is for the Ministries of Finance and Trasport to decide whether the agreement with the Australian consortium should be signed or to anounce a new bid for the privitisation of the company.
