[04] Peace deal aimed to end 6-month rebellion in Fyrom signed yesterday

Under the auspices of NATO and the EU, leaders of the 4 main FYROM and ethnic Albanian parties signed a peace deal yesterday aimed to end the six-month rebellion in FYROM by improving the rights of the one-third ethnic Albanian minority. However, peace in the region depends on the stand of the Albanian rebels who keep setting new terms. In the meantime, a group of 40 military NATO experts intend to fly to Skopje to review the truce and try to find ways of making it stick. A lasting ceasefire and an agreement by the rebels to disarm are the main conditions for deployment of 3,500 NATO troops to collect rebel weapons, along with the signature of Monday s political peace deal. Greece will participate in the weapon collection mission with a 350 men army unit.

The UN Security Council welcomed the signing of the peace agreement in Skopje and told ethnic Albanian leaders to condemn ongoing violence publicly. Greek Prime-minister Kostas Simitis welcomed the agreement and repeated that Greece will back stability, development and European orientation of the neighbour country.
