    A fine and hot day is forecast nationwide, winds northwesterly, moderate.

    In Attica temperatures will range from 22-36 degrees Celcius in Thessaloniki from 16-33 degrees Celcius and on the islands from 21-34 degrees celcius.

    [02] Fear for the spreading of clashes in FYROM

    There is high fear for the spreading of clashes in urban areas of FYROM after the violation of the cease fire truce in Tetovo, Koumanovo and Aratsinovo by Albanian guerillas yesterday. In its extraordiary session today, NATO will decide on whether to deploy peace troops to FYROM.

    In the meantime, FYROM political parties continue negotiations for the drawing up of a peace plan aimed to defuse the crisis.

    The main stumbling block is how to rewrite a constitution drawn up 10 years ago. Slav majority leaders are resigned to making sweeping changes, but Albanian parties want FYROM to become a consensual democracy, where all sensitive decisions would have to be backed by the one-third Albanian minority.

    [03] Russian President called for an agreement to reaffirm current borders the Balcans

    Russian President Vladimir Putin who visited Belgrade and Kossovo called for the signing of an agreement, reaffirming current borders in the Balcans. Talking to Russian commaders in Kossovo, President Putin said this was the essence of a Russia initiative aimed at promoting a comprehensive settlement to ethnic strife in the region.

    Meanwhile, the UN has warned Albanians in Kossovo that it will no longer put up with any violence and extremist actions in the region.

    [04] Mobilisations against globalisation, a new form of extremist crime

    Following the violent incidents in Gothenburg, Sweden - French and German Interior Ministers called for a meeting of their EU couterparts while Germany's Interior Ministry has called for a common hard stand to deal with this new form of extremist crime as it described world mobilisations against globalisation.

    [05] Turkey could not delay Cyprus-EU admission course

    Upon his return from the EU summit in Gothenburg, Cyprus President Glafkos Kliridis said that Turkey could not delay Cyprus-EU admission course.He also underlined that European leaders did not take Turkish threats into serious consideration.

    [06] South Australia's Labour party leader committed himself to support the Cyprus struggle

    Adressing a forum on the issue " Justice in Cyprus " organised by the Pan-Australian Coordiation Committee for the Cypriot Struggle, the leader of South Australia's Labour Party, Michael Ran commited himself to financially support Australian citizens of Cypriot descent who want to have recourse to the European Court to claim compensations for their properties.

    Mr. Ran also stated that Australia would have to set up a Personalities Committee to promote the resolution of the Cyprus issue as it had done in the past for the abolition of the Aparheid in South Africa.

    [07] New reductions in interest rates

    \New reductions in interest rates is expected this week due to high competion among banks.

    New reductions in interest rates will benefit those who want to buy houses as in some cases banks even give a free period of up to two years. However, high competition will probably bring up survival problems for small banks and lead to a new period of mergings.

    [08] President of the Republic first to be honoured in an event organised by the muncipalities of Ahaia

    The local Union of Municipalities of the prefecture of Ahaia organised an event at the Patras University Conference Hall to honour statesmen from Ahaia. Among the first honoured was the President of the Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos, who in his speech referred to the limited responsibilities of the President of the Pepublic and called for their extension.

    [09] Former American President to spend holidays on the Greek islands

    Former American President George Bush and his wife Barbara arrived in Greece yesterday to go on a short cruise to the islands of the Aegean.

    [10] IKA doctors continue strike mobilisations

    IKA doctors are determined to continue 5-day repeated strikes until their demands are met. Among their demands are the withdrawal of the draftbill on first-aid treatment and the permament hiring of doctors with cotracts.

    [11] Church and state cooperation to help the weak

    Addressing a crowd of pilgrims in the island of Lesvos yesterday, Ecumenic Patriarch Vartholomeos stressed the need for cooperation between the church and the state specially to help the weak.

    Panhellenic exams coclude today. Second Lyceum students sit for Latin and Physics and third Lyceum students sit for Biology.

    [13] Meeting of Defence Minister, Akis Tsohatzopoulos with Prime-minister Simitis and Foreig minister today

    In his interview with the Greek state chanel NET ,National Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos left open the possibilty of other cadidacies for the post of Pasok party President apart from Prime-minister Simitis at the next Pasok Party Congreess.

    Mr.Tsohatzopoulos admitted political resposibilities for the drop of the stock market.

    Today Mr.Tsohatzopoulos will meet with Prime-minister Simitis and Foreign Minister Giorge Papadreou to discuss possible participation of the Greek Armed Forces in a international peace force in Kossovo.

    [14] Tanker runs agroud off Greece, spills oil

    A Greek taker ran aground today off the southeastern coast of Greece, damaging one tank and spilling some 118 cubic meters of petrol onto the sea, the Merchant Marine Ministry said.

    All nine crew members are well. The "Vassiliki" was sailing to the southwestern port of Kalamata from Athens. The Ministry said efforts were beig made to contain the spill and to pump the remainig petrol onto another vessel.
