    [01] Statemens to be made by PM Simitis on Social Security System

    During today's meeting of PASOK's Executive Bureau, Prime minister Costas Simitis is expected to guarrantee personally the policy of lowest pensions, the increase of state financing of the Social Security System and the safeguarding of its state and social character.

    In the meantime, Labour minister Tasos Yianitsis is beginning a round of talks with the Confederation of Greek Workers on Wednesday and with the civil servants? board on Thursday.

    [02] New Democracy party ahead of PASOK with 6,8 points

    According to the opinion poll of "Kapa Research" company published in the newspaper To Vima Tis Kyriakis yesterday, New Democracy party is ahead of PASOK ruling party with 6,8 points. Prime minister Costas Simitis, is considered as more suitable for the Premiership's post in comparison to New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis, who follows with a small difference.

    The most popular politicians from PASOK are Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou and Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos and from New Democracy party deputies Yiorgos Souflias and Dora Bakoyianni. Commenting on the results, Culture minister Evagelos Venizelos said that PASOK would cover the difference with the New Democracy party, while in an interview with the newspaper To Vima deputy Theodoros Pagalos asks for more efforts on behalf of PASOK so that the negative climate against it can change.

    Meanwhile, in an interview with the newspaper To Ethnos Tis Kyriakis Development minister Nikos Christodoulakis says that nothing has been lost for PASOK, since PASOK can restore its confidence with civilians. Finally, New Democracy party deputy Dimitris Sioufas commented that the party's strategy in dealing with everyday problems of the civilians and its policy in general had been justified according to research.

    [03] AKEL, winner in Parliamentary elections in Cyprus

    According to the Athens Newsagency, AKEL party is the winner of the Parliamentary elections held in Cyrprus. With 55% of the votes counted, AKEL comes first with 35,1%, President Klerides' DISSI party second with 33,6%, DIKO third with 15,2%, fourth KISOS with 6,5%, New Horizons follows with 2,9%, EDI comes next with 2,1% and last come the Ecologists with 1,8%. The partipation of voters in the elections reached 90%.

    In the meantime, AKEL Secretary General stated that the results of the elections inreased the party's responsibility for for struggle that would lead to the reunion of Cyprus and its people, Greeks and Turks. At the same time, Ankara with a memorandum sent to the 14 European Union country members asks for the freezing of Cyrpus' accession process to the European Union.

    [04] Rise of fuel prices causes concern to the government

    The Development ministry is concerned over the upward course of fuel prices, which result to inflatory pressures. For this reason Development minister Nikos Christodoulakis will meet again with representatives of oil refineries and gas stations in order to convince them to absorb part of the increases of oil prices.

    [05] Extension of time for Olympic Airways bidding

    All Olympic Airways flights will take place according to schedule, since a court described the strike anounced by the Pan-hellenic Tele-communications Union of the employees of the Civil Aviation as illegal and undue. In the meantime, the government is worried over the possible collapse of the bidding process for the privatization of Olympic Airways and for this reason it is trying to find ways to deal with the situation. The Transport minister extended the deadline so that the canditate owners could improve their offers and submit their fresh proposals on June 18.

    [06] First ordination in Cappodocia after 80 years

    Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos carried out the first ordination in Prokopio Cappodocia, yesterday since the exchange of Greek and Turkish populations 80 years ago. Buenos Ayres Metropolitan Tarasios' ordination was watched by hundreds of worshipers from all over Greece and the United States who had been present in Prokopio.

    [07] EU to give green light for mutated cotton says Anomeritis

    In an interview with today's issue of the newspaper ?Ta Nea?, Agriculture minister Yiorgos Anomeritis states that the European Committee is expected to give the green light for the production of genetically mutated cotton in the near future. He also states that Greece is not facing any threatening problem for the public health from genetically mutated products.

    [08] Greece wins medals in Gymnastics

    In the international meeting on gymnastics being held in Thessaloniki, Olympic champion in the Sydney Olympic Games Dimosthenis Tabakos won the gold medal in rings and Vlasis Maras the gold medal in vaulting horse and the silver medal on ground exercises. Finally, in the European Championship event held in Madrid, javelin thrower Costas Gatsoudis had his best throw this year with 91,27 metres.
