It is also believed that a peace agreement is likely to be signed within the weekend between the Serb forces and representatives of the ethnic Albanians in South Serbia before the beginning of peace negotiations. Prime minister Costas Simitis had a two hour telephone conversation with his Bulgarian counterpart Ivan Kostof, with whom he discussed the crisis in South Serbia. They both agreed that the crisis should be dealt through political and diplomatic means based on the United Nations resolutions. The two Prime ministers also stressed that K-4 should take up the control of the region at the FYROM-Kossovo border. In the meantime, one policeman was killed last night when he fell into an ambush set by Albanian extremists on the FYROM - Kossovo border between the villages of Gozintse and Brest already abandoned by a large part of their population. According to the Skopjie police a hand-grenade was thrown against a convoy of cars of the Security Forces most probably by Albanian extremists. [02] New Sports Law presented yesterdayThe leadership of the Culture Ministry yesterday presented the new Sports Law, which will be tabled to the Parliament shortly after Easter.The main axis of the bill mainly refers to the preparation of the Olympic Games and the mass movement for school and professional sports. In the meantime the President of the 2004 Olympic Games Yianna Agelopoulou Daskalaki pointed out that the results of the Olympic Games preparations would be visible after two years while she also stressed that the International Olympics Committee would continue its strict inspections even one day before the opening of the 2004 Olympics. As regards the relations between the organizational committee and the government, Mrs. Daskalki said that they were a team and they should continue working as a team. Finally, Mrs. Daskalaki avoided to take a stand on the creation of an Olympic Games Ministry. [03] Women, one third of the candidates in the ext local and prefectural electionsOn the occasion of the Women World Day, Prime minister Costas Simitis announced that one third of the candidates in the elections for the local and prefectural administration would be women.In his speech at a special session of the Parliament in honour of Greek women living abroad, the Prime minister said that a significant sum of the 3rd community support framework would be allocated to boost women's employment and training. [04] Amendment of the law on transplants, asked Archbishop HristodoulosIn the presence of the Health Minister Alekos Papadopoulos, Archbishop Christodoulos asked for the amendment of the law on transplants specially on points that both the church and doctors have expressed reservations.Mr. Papadopoulos stated that the views of the church and the state did not differ much on that issue. [05] Pasok party conference on the country's developmental planThe two-day sessions of the PASOK party Pan Hellenic conference on the National Development Plan and infrastructure opens today with a speech by Prime minister Simitis.The party's executive bureau and central committee will convene next week. [06] Eliza Boizemberg, spokesman of the newly founded party '' Free citizens movement ''Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos has appointed reknown lawyer Eliza Vozembergh Vryonides as his party's spokesman.[07] University rectors have threatened with mobilisationsUniversity rectors have threatened with mobilizations unless the Education Ministry withdraws the bill providing for the inclusion of Technological Institutes in tertiary education. Relevant decisions will be taken on March 16 and 17.[08] Attacks against two banks in ThessalonikiSelf-made explosives were launched at two banks in Thessaloniki late last night while an arson attempt was made against TV channel Star yesterday.[09] Athens stock marketThe General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange rose by 3,21% yesterday closing at 3.276,25 points.[10] Positive role of international press to save monuments in AfghanistanThe resolution of the Socialist group submitted by PASOK Euro deputy Mursini Zorba refers to the positive role the International Press has played in the world effort for the recall of the Taliban government's decision to destroy all statues and monuments of the Buddist period in Afghanistan.The resolution, which is expected to be adopted by the plenum of the European Parliament in Strasbourg next week, denounces the decision for the destruction of the monuments and calls on the International community to continue its efforts for the cancellation of the decision, which consists not only a crime against international cultural heritage but also has a negative impact on the Islamic world. Finally, reference is made to the interest of the Greek government to buy and transfer to Greece the monuments of Afghanistan bearing the features of the Hellenistic period. [11] Dinos Illiopoulos health deterioratingThe health of renowned Greek actor Dinos Iliopoulos has deteriorated. Dinos Ilionpoulos has been hospitalised since February 24 suffering from pneumonia. According to the doctors, he is responding to the medical treatment.[12] Weather forecastThe National Meteorological Service forecasts for today a sunny day with occasional cloud patches in most parts of the country.Weak to moderate southerly winds in the West and later moderate to strong northerly winds in the Ionian Sea. The temperature in Athens will range from 7 to 17 degrees centigrade, in Thessaloniki from 5-16 degrees centigrade and in the islands from 5 to 16 degrees.
