    [01] Sfinias' death due to suicide

    According to a coroner' s report yesterday, the death of Minoan Flying Dolphins Vice-president Pantelis Sfinias is due to suicide and not to any criminal act by another party.

    Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas has asked from everyone not make any statements until the investigation was concluded.

    Pantelis Sfinias' funeral will take place at the Athens First Cemetary at three pm today.

    [02] Anomeritis to propose ban of animal flour in EU on December 4

    A 55-year old woman hospitalised in Ioannina, with symptoms of the Creutzfeld-Jacob disease - better konown as "mad cow disease" - was described yesterday by Health undersecretary Christina Spyraki as an isolated case, which did not appear to be related to the dangerous ailment.

    The case was also mentioned by Agriculture minister Giorgos Anomeritis who maintained that the woman was suffering from a rare form of brain disease, which was not connected in any way with the mad cow disorder, from which 80 people in Britain and two in France had died so far.

    In the meantime, at the European Union Agriculture ministers extraordinary meeting due to be held in Brussels on December 4, Mr. Anomeritis will propose the ban of the use of animal flour in cattle-breeding, the use of quick tests for the detection of the disease and a common system of checks on all cattle in the European Union country-members.

    Besides, the Agricutlure ministers Council will examine the European Committees' proposal for the temporary ban of animal flour in animal feed. On a similar development, the German Parliament decided yesterday to ban the use of animal flour in Germany.

    [03] Papandreou reiterates Greek positions to Turkish Foreign

    Recent developments on the Cyprus proximity talks as well as the next steps promoted by the UN for a settlement of the long-standing dispute, were the focus of a meeting yesterday between the Greek Foreign minister George Papandreou, the UN Secretary General's special envoy for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto and the Turkish Foreign undersecretary Farouk Lokoglou.

    From his side Mr. Papandreou reiterated during his meeting with Mr. Lokoglou Greece's support for Turkey's European prospects, underlining at the same time that Athens would not ignore what was agreed in Helsinki.

    He also told his Turkish counterpart that Greece would insist until end for the inclusion of references regarding the Cyprus issue and Greek-Turkish relations in the text of Turkey's partnership relationship with the EU.

    These references should be stated as clearly as in the conclusions of the Helsinki summit meeting.

    [04] Olympic Airways to owe 75 billion drs by end of 2000

    In reply to a question in Parliament yesterday regarding the future of Olympic Airways, Transport minister Christos Verelis stated that the company was facing a serious economic problem since by the end of 2000 the ammount it owed would reach 75 billion drachmas.

    He also added that for the company to continue to function with the existing working positions, 51 to 65% of the company's shares should be sold.

    At the same time, during a Press conference yesterday, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis described the solution proposed for Olympic Airways as a crime and critisized the present situation at the Athens Stock Exchange.

    He also did not rule out the possibility for early elections, pointing out at the same time that his party was not raising such a question.

    [05] Six bills for the National Health System

    Two of six bills for the reform of the National Health system will be tabled at Parliament next week.

    The bills concern the creation of a body of inspectors in hospitals and the creation of regional Health systems.

    [06] Parliament celebrates incorporation of Thrace to Greece

    Yesterday the Parliament celebrated the 80 anniversary from the incorporation of Thrace to Greece.

    Addressing the Parliament Prime minister Costas Simitis anounced the boosting of the area with 164 new projects amounting to 107 billion drachmas.

    New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis and other political party leaders delivered speeches.
